Job overview

The Screening Nurse will work within the Health Work and Wellbeing (HWWB) service providing impartial, evidence based, confidential, pro-active Health, Work and Wellbeing services that support the Lead Employer, trust staff, and external customers.  You will support the HWWB team in providing effective, appropriate needs based occupational health activities aimed at optimising health and preventing work related ill health. The post holder must provide a proactive evidence based health and well-being service for all members of staff, working to national guidelines and benchmarks in order to maintain staff well-being both physical and psychological.

The JD & PS are currently under AfC review and are subject to change.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work within clearly defined occupational health procedures, conferring with senior colleagues when appropriate
  • To support the organisation with the pre-employment screening of staff 
  • Work unsupervised within limits of competency
  •  Adhere to approved Patient Group Directions for administration of medicines/vaccines
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records, (both electronic and written)
  •  Apply occupational health knowledge, principles and practice to assess both at pre-employment and during employment, the effects of an individual’s health on the work to be undertaken and the impact of the known risks of the work on their health, giving due consideration to legislation such as the Equality Act (2010)
  • Undertake the Duty Nurse role.
  • Undertake health surveillance and interpret the results in line with Trust Policy, national legislation and Department of Health guidance, using appropriate clinical measurement equipment.  Discuss results and implications with the client and liaise with the occupational health senior team, i.e. manager and/or physician where appropriate
  • Screen clients in relation to identified infectious disease risk and offer vaccination or advice as appropriate
  • Liaise with client’s specialist consultants and GP’s as required.  Confer with Occupational Health Physician or Manager where appropriate.  Advise managers regarding client’s fitness for work using appropriate certificates and formal reports
  • Undertake follow up, risk assessment and support for clients who have sustained occupational exposure to blood borne viruses and to advice on an identified, liaise with the Occupational Health Physician to establish the need for post exposure prophylaxis
  • Provide advice, screening and treatment (within parameters of approved Patient Group Directions), to clients regards work related infectious diseases exposure/contact
  • Facilitate timely referral to allied health professionals, e.g. physiotherapy
  • Facilitate and support clients in accessing counselling service
  • Undertake peripatetic clinic work at various sites that will require transporting notes and equipment (manual handling)
  • Support the delivery of the Winter Vaccine campaign in line with national guidance

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To access ESR and OPAS to ensure appropriate recording of medical records
  • Ensure that own mandatory training is maintained

 

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSBILITIES

  •  Act as a mentor and role model for new members of staff
  •  Participate in the development and presentation of training material related to Occupational Health
  • Participate in the delivery of health education and promotion activities
  • Manage own personal development to maintain current evidence best practice
  • Undertake health promotion on a one to one (every contact counts) or group basis

 

LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Contribute to the smooth running of Health Work And Well Being Service
  • To provide specialist clinical advice in accordance with best OH practice and evidence based practice.
  • Maintain effective communication with staff, HWWB team, manager, HR and external agencies where appropriate.

 

RESEARCH & AUDIT

  • Contribute to evidence based practice and research projects within the clinical areas and ensure that written standards/protocols are formulated, utilised and reviewed regularly and as necessary
  • Contribute and actively take the lead in audits as required by SEQOHs

 

GENERAL DUTIES

·         To adhere to relevant Code of Practice of Professional body 

  • To observe the provisions of and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.
  • To actively participate in the annual performance review to identify personal development needs
  • To attend Trust Statutory and Mandatory training sessions as required and any other training courses relevant to the post.
  • To fully comply with the relevant sections of the Health and Safety at Work Act.  They must also understand and implement Mersey and West Lancashire  NHS Hospitals Trust “Statement of Policy on Health and Safety at Work” and the Trust corporate “Health and Safety Policies and Procedures”.  You are required to follow all applicable rules and procedures relating to Health and Safety at Work and to take all responsible precautions to avoid actions.
  •         To be aware of the confidential aspects of the post. To keep up to date with the requirements of information governance; undertake mandatory training and follow Trust policies and procedures to ensure that trust information is dealt with legally, securely, efficiently and effectively. Breaches of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action that may involve dismissal. You must maintain the confidentiality of information about service user staff and organisational business in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation 2018 (GDPR) and Caldicott principles.
  •  The post holder should also be aware that, regardless of any action taken by the employing authority, breaches of confidentiality could result in civil action for damages.
