Job overview

The Audit and Guidelines Midwife will be responsible for ensuring the co-ordination of the clinical audit programme within Maternity Services. The post holder will provide expert advice and promote clinical audit and quality improvement and assurance projects relevant to Maternity Services.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the coordination of evidence-based guidelines (including Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and Policies and Patient Information). Working in close collaboration with the MDT and wider Quality and Safety team in coproduction of relevant maternity documents within the Women's and Newborn Division

The post holder will provide support with aspects of the quality governance agenda under the guidance of the Quality and Safety Matron (Maternity and Neonates)

Audit and Guidelines Midwife will be responsible for ensuring the co-ordination of evidence-based guidelines (including SOPS, LOCSIPS and patient information leaflets) and will support the clinical audit programme. 


The post holder will provide support and promote clinical audit and quality improvement, which is relevant to the maternity department.
The post holder will contribute to creating a learning environment in the department acting as role model and mentor to less experienced midwives, student midwives and other staff.

If successful in this role, there is a requirement for you to have a standard/enhanced DBS. This will be paid for by the Trust and then deducted from your salary over a period of 3 month. As this vacancy is within the division of Women’s and Children’s, there is a mandatory requirement for successful applicants to join the DBS update service. The cost of joining the update service is £13 per year, and applicants are liable to cover this cost with no reimbursement from the Trust. Further details of how to join the update service will be provided upon appointment.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Practicing Midwife
  • First Degree or equivalent level of experience working in a midwifery role
  • Professional training/learning which demonstrates highly developed professional knowledge / continuing professional development
  • SSSA Practice Assessor/ Mentorship qualification
  • Broad range of clinical midwifery experience acquired through significant practice in a variety of settings including labour ward
  • Experience of reporting and presenting complex data analysis in a variety of reports and media, including oral presentations
  • Experience of risk management and quality assurance
  • Experience of audit
  • Experience of working in partnership with a multi disciplinary team
  • Experience of proactively engaging service users
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree or equivalent level of experience in a highly specialised role
  • Quality Improvement Methodology Qualification
  • Leadership Qualification
  • Experience of managing budgets
  • Demonstrable evidence of leading on delivery, design and implementation of service/quality improvement initiatives

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of National NHS agenda and the National Maternity
  • Transformation requirements
  • Knowledge of Ockenden Report, CQC, NICE guidance and the Maternity Improvement Scheme (MIS)
  • Understanding of the Maternity Voices Partnership
  • Strong evidence of excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills
  • Ability to manage difficult situations effectively
  • Proficient digital skills, including presentations. High level of ability to use Microsoft and other software packages/platforms in delivery of role responsibilities.
  • Ability to produce clear and concise reports for use internally and externally to the Trust
  • Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills
  • Clear understanding and commitment to equality

  • An understanding of current government and NHS strategy and policy in respect of clinical governance, audit and effectiveness and quality • improvement
