Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic nurse to join our Gynaecology Inpatient Unit as a band 6 Deputy Ward Manager.  We are looking to recruit an exceptional and enthusiastic nurse to join our team. . 

The Gynaecology Unit consists of an 8 bedded inpatient ward, day case unit, and an acute Gynaecology Assessment and Early Pregnancy Unit.  The inpatient unit also supports with surgical outliers.  

The post holder will provide visible clinical leadership, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality, and patient-centred care across all areas.
The Deputy Ward Manager will support workforce planning, staff development, patient flow, governance, quality improvement, and service delivery, whilst acting as a role model and expert practitioner within gynaecology services. The role is essential in maintaining staffing oversight, coordinating daily operational activity, managing patient pathways, and ensuring compliance with Trust policies, national standards, and regulatory requirements.

Main duties of the job

• Assist the Ward or Department Manager in managing the Ward or Department, deputising for them in their absence

• Act as a role model to other staff by participating in direct patient care demonstrating an advanced level of practice and knowledge, encouraging the expansion of nurses skills and knowledge

• Provide assistance to junior staff in the assessment, planning and delivery of care

• Under the direction of the Ward Manager, take an active role in Clinical Governance issues within the area of responsibility• Assist the Ward/Departmental Manager in encouraging effective and timely verbal and/or written communications to patients/clients, relatives, visitors and colleagues

• Take a proactive role in developing effective and supportive teamwork.

Support staff supervision, appraisal, competency assessment, and professional development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Deputy Ward Manager is responsible for supporting the Ward Manager in the operational, professional, and clinical leadership of the Gynaecology Ward, Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU), Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU), and Day Case Unit. The post holder will provide visible leadership, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality, and patient-centred care whilst promoting a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.
The Deputy Ward Manager will act as an expert clinical practitioner, role model, mentor, and leader, supporting staff in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. They will deputise for the Ward Manager in their absence, ensuring effective management of staffing, patient flow, quality, governance, and resources across the service.
The post holder will contribute to service development, workforce management, and clinical governance activities, ensuring that Trust objectives, policies, procedures, and professional standards are maintained and embedded within daily practice.

Person specification

Qualifications, Specific Experience and Training

Essential criteria
  • 1st Level Registered Nurse (relevant to area of work)
  • Relevant diploma / degree or due for completion within 12 months
  • Minimum of three years post-registration experience of which two years should be at Primary Nurse or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification
  • Recognised teaching qualification

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Relevant Clinical knowledge/experience of the speciality
Desirable criteria
  • Student nurse assessor
  • Evidence of ability to act as a preceptor/mentor to new staff
  • Evidence of involvement in producing teaching strategies/packages
