Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for Healthcare Support Workers to work as part of the clinical team within ward 8 general surgical ward in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and will be expected to undertake fundamental aspects of patient care including undertaking patient’s vital signs.

The individual will be required to have good communication skills to be able to relate to patients, members of patients families and the multidisciplinary team that work within the clinical area. 

Welsh Skills Desirable: This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. This doesn’t mean essential; whilst the candidate doesn't need to have skills in Welsh, we'll consider it an advantage when short-listing and selecting candidates. This isn’t ‘fluency’, just Speaking & Listening skills at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above. Level 3 means basic conversations with patients about their everyday health. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will assist in the provision of care to patients/clients by providing a range of personal care duties as designated by a Qualified Nurse.

These tasks will involve direct and indirect care for the benefit of the patient/client in accordance with agreed protocols, and include basic care duties such as :

  • Enabling patients to maintain personal hygiene through assistance with shower/bath, washing facilities access and use of toilet facilities; promoting independence where possible.
  • Enabling patients to eat and drink, assisting where appropriate.
  • Escorting patients/clients to other departments/hospitals.
  • Keeping up to date with mandatory training requirements.
  • Maintaining a good standard of cleanliness in the ward, including changing bed linen and disposing of clinical waste in accordance with organisational policies

The Health Board currently operate a number of different shift systems. The most common are a 12.5 hour shift, inclusive of either one 30 minute or two 30-minute unpaid breaks. These shift patterns are subject to review and the Health Board reserves the right to change working arrangements. CTM is a Health Board committed to meaningful consultation with staff and to making balanced decisions that consider all aspects of our service and workforce.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of general education including numeracy and literacy skills, with a commitment to undertake training to QCF Level 2 in Health and Social Care/Clinical Healthcare Support
Desirable criteria
  • To hold QCF Level 2 qualifications in Health & Social Care/Clinical Health Care
