Fetal Surveillance Midwife Sonographer

Job overview

Maternity Cover Secondment / Fixed Term until 31.08.26

Responsible for providing holistic women centred midwifery care and promoting midwife led care in partnership with other health professionals. Works independently as a midwife sonographer performing and reporting on third trimester ultrasound scans, informing birthing people of the findings and collaborating to provide follow on care. Act as a lead professional for other midwives and as part of a wide multi-disciplinary team with regard to third trimester ultrasound scanning and growth restriction. Promote and maintain professional standards ensuring midwifery and sonography practices are evidence based. Supervise and facilitate training and practical skills of trainee midwife sonographers and members of the obstetric team who have undergone or are undertaking a formal ultrasound course. To engage with audit and disseminate the findings to the wider MDT. Participate in guideline development, quality improvement projects and service development.

Main duties of the job

People/Management Excellence 

·       Co-ordinating an off-duty rota to ensure a self-sufficient midwife-led Growth scan clinic based on clinical workload

·       Undertake appraisals

·       Peer review scan quality assurance as per BMUS guidance for whole sonography team

·       Maintain regular service quality audit and implement results

·       Report data to the management and the wider team

·       Undertake quality improvement projects where necessary in order to improve the service

Education, Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Postgraduate qualification at Level 7 in third trimester Ultrasound
  • Clinical expertise in midwifery practice with evidence of professional development or education
  • Experience in third trimester ultrasound practice
  • Previous experience of mentorship of students
  • Experience in audit/ ultrasound quality assurance/ rota coordination

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Contemporaneous knowledge of maternity policy and strategy and wider issues affecting maternity services
  • Good technical knowledge of ultrasound and screening for fetal growth restriction
