Fetal Monitoring Lead Midwife

Job overview

As the Lead Fetal Monitoring midwife, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting managers and colleagues to meet the objectives of the national maternity transformation programme, Better Births and to deliver the local transformation plan to achieve better outcomes for women and babies.

The NHS Long Term Plan has reiterated the NHS’s commitment to reducing stillbirth, maternal mortality, neonatal mortality, serious brain injury and pre-term births. An important component of the transformation workstreams is effective fetal monitoring during labour and this is part of the national Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle v3.

Monitoring fetal wellbeing has also been identified as an immediate and essential action from the Ockenden Report to appoint a dedicated lead Midwife with sufficient seniority and expertise to effectively lead the service forward.

Main duties of the job

The role supports the organisation in driving transformation as well as value for money in planning and delivering a high-quality service.  The role is designed to build a combination of subject matter expertise and technical skills to develop strong service delivery ensuring effective fetal monitoring during labour. It aims to build on the current practice of achieving healthy birth outcomes for babies who are born in our maternity unit.

 The post holder will be required to provide support within a 24/7 shift work system. The role will be based predominantly in the clinical environment 50% clinical, 50% non-clinical. There will also be a requirement to and participate within the maternity escalation rota.

Educations, Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Degree in higher education or equivalent
  • Experienced Midwife qualified minimum 3 years
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in facilitating live drills

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the complexity of the NHS and the national picture and how this impacts on midwifery
  • Confident to work assertively with multi-disciplinary team
  • Broad range of midwifery experience within acute setting with experience of CTG interpretation and escalation
Desirable criteria
  • Innovative approach to midwifery care

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as a member of a team as well as the wider multidisciplinary team
  • Leadership skills. Effective communication skills both verbal and written
  • Basic IT skills
