Senior Community Children's Nurse

Job overview
This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience of working within the Community Children’s Nursing (CCN) Service based at Northampton General Hospital.
The post holder will be responsible for the management of a caseload of children/young people aged 0-18 years assessing, planning and delivering evidence-based nursing care in the community setting across West Northants.
You will be working collaboratively with the child/young person, their parents/carers and the multi professional team around the family (Including interagency working). Use of enhanced communication skills to promote good working relationships are required in order to facilitate the best outcomes possible for the child/young person.
You will be undertaking lone working and be expected to undertake risk assessments and adhere to local policy and procedures.
You will deputise for the Lead Nurse in her absence, regularly provide management in the day to day running of the service and provide supervision to junior members of the team, and mentorship to students in training.
Our core service hours are 08.00-18.00 Monday – Friday, working contracted hours as a shift pattern of early shifts – 08.00-16.00 and late shifts 10.00-18.00 across the working week.
The role requires the ability to work flexibly across a 7 day service, and may include unsocial hours and on call, on occasion when required for End of Life care.
Main duties of the job

- Promote the operational and strategic vision of the service in conjunction with the Trust’s vision.
Supporting Clinical Excellence
- To carry out a range of clinical skills e.g. enteral feeding, administration of intravenous therapies, administration of injections, wound care, CVAD competencies in the community setting
- To provide clinical expertise by setting standards in the assessment, planning implementation and evaluation of patient’s clinical care needs using agreed protocols,
- To provide clinical expertise in providing education and support for the children and families in the community setting.
- To be able to support patients, families and colleagues in highly distressing or emotional circumstances.
- To be able to analyse and interpret presenting data and clinical presentation in order to meet the complex needs of the patient, providing holistic care to the child and family
and ensuring that timely referrals are made to other services as necessary.

- To ensure professional skilled nursing care is provided to patients within the community/home setting and adapted to meet individual needs.

People/Management Excellence
- Act as a professional role model at all times, providing clinical expertise to the team and other agencies with whom we interface.
- Provide clinical supervision to staff, students and provide training to other professionals,
- In the Lead Nurse’s absence ensure sickness and absence is managed in line with Trust Policy.

Professional Responsibilities
- To maintain accurate and contemporaneous documentation across a range of systems.

- Maintain the systems which are in place, to allow nurses to meet all responsibilities of the Nursing and Midwifery Code.

- To lead in the creation and review of policies and guidelines, this will facilitate the safest. care for the child, family and community children’s nurses.
- Support the department in obtaining feedback from service users and contribute to reviewing feedback to inform service development.
- Appraise, interpret and apply suggestions, recommendations and directives to improve, services and support the Lead Nurse in the management of change.
Person specification
Education and Training
Essential criteria
- RN Child or RNLD with relevant experience
- Recognised training in Teaching/Assessing
- Evidence of post qualification continued professional development
Desirable criteria
- Degree level Nursing qualification
- Advanced communication skills training or equivalent
- Training in children’s palliative and end of life care
- Training in leadership/management
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Post qualification paediatric nursing experience, preferably within Community Children’s Nursing or other relevant setting
- Experience in interfacing with multi-disciplinary team.
- Evidence of being involved in child safeguarding practices
Desirable criteria
- Experience of delivering training to parents/carers
- Awareness of SEND strategy
- Experience of palliative & end of life care for children
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Confidence in varied clinical skills to include enteral feeding, administration of intravenous therapies, administration of injections, wound care, CVAD competencies
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to deliver care in a variety of sometimes physically demanding settings
- Means and ability to carry out visits across the West Northants area in a timely manner
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of the application of leadership skills
- Experience in developing and supporting varied programmes of teaching and assessing
