Job overview

Northampton General Hospital is seeking enthusiastic and compassionate Registered Children’s Nurses to join our vibrant paediatric team across Paddington Ward and Disney Ward.

Our paediatric departments provide high‑quality, family‑centred care to children and young people aged 0–18 years, offering a diverse and rewarding clinical experience across a full range of medical and surgical specialities.

As a Staff Nurse within our paediatric services, you will play a key role in delivering safe, effective, evidence‑based care. You will be responsible for:

  • Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for a designated group of patients
  • Providing high standards of care to children, young people and their families
  • Acting as a positive role model within the team
  • Supporting the smooth running of the ward in the absence of the Ward Manager or Senior Staff Nurse
  • Contributing to a supportive, inclusive, learning‑focused environment

This is an exciting opportunity to work across areas that include:

  • Paediatric High Dependency Unit (PHDU)
  • A bespoke paediatric oncology/haematology service
  • Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU)
  • Elective and emergency surgical pathways
  • Medical specialities including CAMHS and eating disorders

You must have a full NMC registration. We are not able to provide OSCE support

Main duties of the job

As a band 5 nurse, you will provide a family centred approach to care, have good communication skills with a willingness to learn and work as part of a large team.

Your personal and professional development of skills and knowledge will be supported by the Practice Development Facilitator, Clinical Educator and our well established and experienced team  across the wards' specialities. Opportunities are  considered  for further training within the appropriate specialty areas.

Students across several training pathways are regularly on placement with the team therefore a qualification in supervising and assessing students is required. Training will be provided if necessary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care.

Actively participate in the education, development and supervision of other staff members.

Act as a clinical and professional role model, assessing and supporting students and learners on placement within the clinical area.

Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.

To maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care.

To co-ordinate the patients’ discharge arrangements in accordance with NGH Discharge Policy.

To educate patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified.

To complete patient documentation correctly.

To maintain a safe ward environment.

To assist in establishing and monitoring protocols/care pathways.

To participate in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication written and verbal.

To ensure patient confidentiality.

To supervise junior staff in the delivery of care.

Responsible for the safe supply, storage, administration, checking and disposal of medications including controlled drugs.

To undertake any expanded roles deemed necessary for the role following the Trust policy ‘Expansion of Professional Practice for Registered Healthcare Practitioners’.

Contribute to the education and training of others, gaining an understanding of clinical supervision.

Actively promote evidence-based practice within the clinical area and contribute to audit initiatives.

Adhere to all Trust Policies and Health & Safety, as applicable.

To develop and maintain an awareness of budgeting, exercising care and economy in the ordering and use of equipment, supported by written documentation where applicable.

Responsible for the effective and efficient use of Clinical, physical and financial resources.

To be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness.

To practice clinical competencies in line with relevant Trust initiatives e.g. Essence of Care.

To maintain and promote an awareness of evidence-based practice and participate in its Implementation.

To contribute to research and development programmes within the
ward/department.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/RN child
  • NMC Registration
  • RN/RMN/LD with Paediatric experience
  • Mentorship/Assessor and Supervisor
  • Qualification or willing to undertake
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification in Oncology or HDU

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of continued professional development and knowledge of local and national polices
  • Interest and academic ability to undertake further education in paediatric area
  • Can demonstrate understanding and incorporate customer care within the clinical setting
  • Able to work with/facilitate, teach and assess students
  • Knowledge and experience of working within a Paediatric acute ward setting.
  • Paediatric Oncology experience
Desirable criteria
  • Paediatric HDU experience/ training
  • PILS /EPLS

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of relevant developments in paediatric nursing
  • Demonstrate good communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • An awareness of Paediatric research and evidence based practice in the clinical setting
