Job overview

An opportunity has arisen to be part of the clinical education team in Endoscopy. There are two Clinical Support Trainer posts available. The post holders will work together as part of the clinical education team to lead on health care assistant training and support the clinical educators in delivering training to the clinical workforce. The post holder should be passionate about training, supporting staff, and assuring excellence and high quality care given to patients at all times. 

There will be two CSTs that will work together to cover all three endoscopy sites, they will be allocated one or two main sites, but may be required to cover the third or flex to meet service needs. Flexible working will be considered and discussed on appointment. 

Main duties of the job

Lead on health care assistant training and support heath care assistants in their training and development.

Act as a role model and key point of contact to new starters in their development and ensure they are supported and trained to a high standard in all competencies. 

Work with Clinical Educators to monitor training levels and ensure all staff are training appropriately in mandatory training, medical devices, manual handling, and endoscopy specific skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·         Work with clinical educators to monitor mandatory training and medical devices levels for the RNs and HCAs and ensure training is completed in a timely fashion, assisting staff if necessary.

·         Be an authorised trainer for relevant medical devices and provide medical devices training and sign off for all clinical staff as required.

·         Assist staff in completing JETS workforce portfolios. Ensure staff complete JETS workforce e learning and portfolio in a timely fashion.

·         Be a manual handling assessor, completing manual handling assessments for all staff as required.

·         Assist the clinical educator in keeping an up-to-date training spreadsheet in regard to specialist endoscopist training packages and training courses.

·         Plan and write inductions for new HCAs, allocating mentors for them to work with.

·         Work with new starter HCAs during their induction period, weekly where possible, to monitor their progress and support.

·         Perform catch ups with new starter HCAs, ensuring they are meeting expectations, and adjusting training/plans where necessary to ensure they meet the required standards.

·         Write SMART action plans along with clinical educators for any staff not meeting expectations.

·        A minimum of 60% of the CSTs time will be spent working clinically: working with new starters in the rooms, medical devices training, manual handling assessments, signing off competencies, training staff on endoscopy specific kit. 

·         Keep in regular contact with Clinical Educator and Ward Manager for sites they are allocated to keep them up to date with training on the unit, escalate any issues, and if any staff members are struggling.

Endoscopy Experience

Essential criteria
  • Maths and English GCSE grade A-C/4-9 or equivalent (eg functional skills level 2)
  • At least 1 years experience in endoscopy
  • All endoscopy competencies completed
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Training Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of supporting colleagues/new starters/ acting as a mentor
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in JETS workforce /acting as faculty
  • Authorised trainer on medical devices
  • Experience in teaching small groups
  • Experience in managing staff that are struggling to maintain achieve the desired level of competency
  • Understanding of how mandatory training and medical devices training is delivered and monitored within the trust/experience in monitoring this
  • Manual Handling Assessor
  • Experience in writing staff inductions
  • Experience in managing own time and working to deadlines
  • Ability to evaluate effectiveness of training sessions and adapt as necessary, with support.
