Job overview

NUH Life is a state-of -the-art fertility outpatients, andrology and donor sperm bank based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Queens Campus.

We provide NHS fertility consultations to all, including heterosexual couples, single women, same sex couples and couples with children.

We provide NHS funded treatments including ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination and donor insemination to those who are eligible and also affordable self-funded treatment to those who fall outside the NHS funding criteria.

We are licensed by the HFEA for the storage of sperm, recruitment and screening of sperm donors.

 

Main duties of the job

 You should be able to work autonomously to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of the patient and care for and manage their own caseload of patients.  You will be able to evaluate and vet new referrals to the unit both NHS and private and assign to appropriate clinician. You should be able to work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to develop the service in order to meet the needs of patients and their families. The post holder will demonstrate clinical judgement and critical decision making skills based upon evidence based practice and be able to provide specialist training across functional boundaries

The post holder will act as a Fertility Nurse specialist and be required to work within the rest of the NUH Life team. We would encourage those with either nursing or midwifery services to apply.

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Produce timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents
  • Can minimise interpersonal conflict and barriers to communication
  • Ability to work within an MDT and service development
  • Understands the role of advocacy
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership experience
  • • Experience of supporting service development initiatives

Analytical and judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate an ability to assess, plan, deliver, prioritise and evaluate patient care
  • Demonstrate an understanding of specialist nurse role in relation to the specialty.
  • Able to respond to problem situations and ensure that effective interventions are put in place
  • Supportive role in the Successful implementation and management of a nursing change process
  • Recognition of own level of competence and limitations. Able to identify own learning needs

Planning and organisational skills

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Physically able to perform the full range of nursing duties.

Training and eduction

Essential criteria
  • Current level 1 NMC registration.
  • Relevant post-reg study relevant to specialist pathway / willingness to undertake at diploma / degree level
  • Teaching and assessing qualification / have completed teaching and assessing supervisor training.
  • Completion of all local competency packages or has undertaken WINW packages essential to role and specialty
  • Relevant post registration experience within reproductive health/ maternity.
Desirable criteria
  • Formal leadership / management training
  • Research training / experience
  • Degree in health/nursing related studies

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Can demonstrate professional autonomy and effective decision-making skills when managing caseload, seeking support when appropriate
  • Ability to convey sensitive info in an empathetic manner to patients, relatives and staff
  • Ability to manage clinical area/ward efficiently and effectively
  • Experience in using relevant hospital IT systems
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in audit or research
  • Experience of managing risk, handling clinical incidents and complaints
  • Willingness to complete fertility competencies
