Midwifery Ward Manager

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Maternity Ward Manager to join the Perinatal Service at Nottingham University Hospital's. The post is permanent at 37.5 hours per week.

The Maternity Ward Manager will be responsible for leading and operationally running the maternity ward which consists of postnatal women.

The successful candidate will work within the wider management team, also working closely with the multidisciplinary teams across maternity to provide safe, high quality care.

The Maternity Ward Manager will provide strategic and operational leadership to the maternity ward, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, woman-centred care that is consistent with best practice, organisational standards, and professional guidelines. The post holder will be responsible for managing and developing a multidisciplinary team of midwives and support staff, maintaining effective communication, and fostering a positive, collaborative working environment. They will lead on staff development, performance management, and resource planning, ensuring services are delivered efficiently and responsively to the needs of women and their families. In this role, you will have a 24-hour responsibility for the ward, be accountability for service delivery, quality assurance, and continuous improvement, working closely with senior leadership and multidisciplinary colleagues to achieve clinical and organisational objectives. As the Ward Manager you will have line management responsibilities for the team including the responsibility for supporting professional development. You will ensure all members of your team have a personal development plan and will work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to develop women centred services. You will maintain clinical competencies, ensuring practice is evidence based.

Managerial

  • Have 24-hour continuing responsibility for the ward and ensure that Trust Policies and Procedures are implemented.
  • Exercise leadership, providing support and guidance where necessary to all healthcare professionals within the maternity team. In conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, produce and monitor standards of care for the specialty.

Leadership

  • To empower staff to create an environment, which is challenging, stimulating and supportive to individuals, promoting lifelong learning in the improvement of women centred care. 
  • To be visible and accessible to staff, women and their families. 

Clinical

  • Ensure high quality, evidence – based care is offered to women and babies, in collaboration with the senior leadership team. To identify the common issues which affect the quality of care devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings ensuring agreed action is undertaken.

Governance

  • Investigate accidents and other untoward occurrences concerning women, relatives, visitors or staff that arise on the ward/department, reporting and recording accurately as required, according to agreed policies. Completion and monitoring of action plans and sharing learning from incidents. 

User Experience

  • Be an effective leader and role model and will have a particular responsibility to ensure that women are involved in their care, are able to feedback and see improvements made as a result. 

Educational

  • To be responsible for creating and maintaining a learning environment. To support education and staff development through induction programmes for new staff, preceptorship and mandatory training. To monitor staff learning and development. 

Knowledge and Communication

  • Contribute towards maintaining an environment conducive to learning and development.

  • Registered Midwife currently on the NMC register
  • Midwifery Degree
  • Assessing and mentoring qualification
  • Evidence of CPD

Knowledge and Skills

  • Extensive post registration experience and experience of leading a team
  • Excellent clinical skills
  • Excellent managerial, leadership and organisational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
