Job overview
We are looking for a dynamic and innovative individual to join the site operations team, someone who is able think on their feet and make decisions quickly in order to ensure the safe operational running of NUH sites. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate excellent time management skills, leadership and problem-solving skills, who looks at the bigger picture and has an open, adaptable and flexible “can do” attitude. You will also be someone who is confident using their own initiative, working under pressure in an ever changing, fast-moving environment.
The post holder will have unrivalled drive, energy and determination, coupled with a proven track record in working with clinical and non-clinical staff to deliver change. Experience of working operationally is advantageous. Bringing with you effective team working skills, the post holder will also be an expert in motivating, influencing and persuading staff from a range of professional backgrounds to engage with the 4 hour A&E agenda particularly, and improve the Trust’s performance in this area.
Main duties of the job
The Duty Matron will work proactively with divisional nurses to support patient flow from the point of patient admission through to discharge, liaising with relevant clinical teams and divisions as necessary to minimise delays and problem solve flow issues supporting all government targets for emergency and elective patient pathways. Using live Nerve Centre data, the team will oversee allocation of all emergency and elective patients across the Trust daily, ensuring safe and appropriate patient placement and appropriately activate the escalation policy actions at all times. The post holder will develop excellent working relationships with clinical teams across the Trust, working in partnership with clinical teams to maintain activity levels in line with Service Level Agreements and addressing any capacity and blocks within service delivery.
In undertaking the duties for this post the post holder must comply with the NMC – ‘The Code’. The post holder will be based at City Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre and will be expected to participate in the Duty Matron rota which ensures there is senior professional nurse leadership for site management 7 days per week 24/7.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Working with a vision of “delivering excellence in all everything we do”, the Duty Matron will work within a clinical, mobile bed management team responsible for the Trusts bed compliment.
The Duty Matron will be responsible for placing the right patients, in the right place, at the right time, supporting all government targets for emergency and elective patient pathways.
The Duty Matron will proactively support patient flow from the point of patient admission through to discharge, liaising with relevant clinical teams and divisions as necessary to minimise delays and problem solve flow issues.
The post holder will develop excellent working relationships with clinical teams across the Trust to ensure the effective utilisation of hospital beds.
In undertaking the duties for this post the post holder must comply with the NMC – ‘The Code’.
The post holder will be based at City Hospital and/or the Queen’s Medical Centre and will be expected to participate in the duty matron rota that ensures there is senior professional leadership for site management 7 days per week 24/7.

Essential criteria
- First degree or equivalent in health related subject
- Qualified clinical practitioner registered in NMC
Desirable criteria
- Masters degree or equivalent post basic training
Experience

- 5 years post registration experience including management
- Experience of leading and delivering programmes of change within an acute NHS setting
