Are you a newly qualified Mental Health Nurse seeking a new opportunity?

The AMHT is excited to be recruiting further Band 5 newly qualified mental health nurses to join our busy but rewarding community team.  

The successful candidate will join a dedicated staff group providing assessment and evidence-based treatment interventions to a wide range people in Oxford and the surrounding area, including the market town of Bicester and surrounding villages of Islip, Woodstock and Kidlington. 

We use the principles of a Flexible Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) model of healthcare; which enables us to be focused on the recovery of the patient through a multidisciplinary (MDT) approach; with expertise from doctors, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, support workers and psychological therapies staff. We also have twice weekly MDT meetings, where we discuss clinical matters within our supportive team. We strive to provide person centred evidence-based care to patients, where possible working collaboratively with their families and carers.

Main duties of the job

This role is open to registered mental health nurses who have recently qualified and are keen to undertake supported professional development in the community setting.

You will be supported as a newly qualified practitioner to manage a caseload of patients experiencing a range of severe mental health conditions.

You will be expected to deliver and maintain high quality and meaningful care for our patients.  You will need to be a highly motivated practitioner who has experience of mental health services and can demonstrate the ability to initiate and manage your work effectively. The team is highly supportive and committed to delivering high quality patient care; where the caseload can be demanding, diverse and frequently complex.

Regular supervision will be provided and you will be encouraged to undertake any training relevant to your professional and personal development.

You will need to be able to work autonomously, with a caseload of patients with whom you will engage and offer the recommended treatment and support. You will be able to assess and plan treatment with service users. You will also be able to assess and manage risk, and have knowledge about the application of the safeguarding processes.

  • Under the guidance of a named supervisor, take day-to-day responsibility as Lead Professional or Key Worker under the Community Mental health Framework for an identified caseload of clients with needs of moderate complexity.
  •  Administer and understand the use of medication for people with Mental Health difficulties, including side effects and contra-indications.
  • Devise treatment programmes to address the rehabilitation and recovery needs and the physical wellbeing, of people with severe and enduring mental health problems as Key Worker, under the guidance of a named supervisor, undertaking group interventions relative to caseload priorities.
  • Undertake generic mental health assessments and formulate agreed support plans, under the supervision of senior practitioners in the AMHT

  • Undertake AMHT duty under the guidance and supervision of senior practitioners in the AMHT.

  • Work with families / carers to assist them in understanding mental health and coping effectively with issues arising from their role as carers.

The AMHT operates, Monday to Friday 09:00 – 17:00 with crisis care being provided by the Oxford Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team (CRHTT) and Night team at all other times.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • To have a good knowledge and interest in community care and have specific clinical expertise in mental health.
  • To understand and have experience of Risk Management
  • To have a good understanding of Clinical Governance
  • To understand the legal responsibilities of the profession
  • To have an understanding of CMHTs and interdisciplinary working
Desirable criteria
  • To have a good knowledge of community services
  • To have awareness of National and local issues concerning mental health

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Professional Qualification (Degree or equivalent), Registered Nurse
  • Professional registration
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) portfolio

Aptitude and Skills

Essential criteria
  • To be IT literate
  • To have excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • To be able to prioritise effectively
  • To show evidence of sound critical thinking skills
  • To be able to work collaboratively as part of a team

Experiance

Essential criteria
  • To have appropriate experience which should include some community and working with mental health.
  • To have experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Community work with people with mental health needs
