Job overview

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Deputy ward Manager to join our team on the Inpatient Ward of Whitchurch Community Hospital. The main function of this role is to support the Ward Manager to:

    • Provide effective clinical leadership and management to lead and motivate the team.
    • Promote and monitor safe and effective practice.
    • Enhance the patient/client experience.
    • Promote cohesive team working.
    • Contribute to the delivery of the organisation’s objectives.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure that care delivered to patients is evidenced based, meet’s their needs and wishes, provides appropriate clinical outcomes and achieves high standards of a patient experience.
  • Support the Ward Manager to ensure all staff understand the ‘essential standards of quality and safety and ensure that these are met and that fundamental care is delivered in the most professional, kind, sensitive and appropriate way.
  • Ensure self and team are aware of all Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards and that these are applied in every day practice.
  • Ensure self and team adhere to Trust guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Support the Ward Manager to ensure that the ward team possess the knowledge, skills and competence to effectively fulfil the care needs of older people and those with long term conditions.
  • Identify and take effective measures to prevent and control infection in accordance with local and national policy and provide care based on the highest standards, knowledge and competence.
  • Implement the delivery of consistent implementation, monitoring and evaluation of best practice in:
  • Pressure ulcer prevention and management.
  • Falls prevention.
  • Catheter Care.
  • Hydration & Nutrition.
  • Infection Prevention Control.

  • Effective Level 1 Registration with NMC.
  • Mentorship of Student Nurses/Practice Assessor experience.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
  • Nursing Degree or Diploma or currently studying towards

  • Experience of managing rehabilitation or long-term conditions in a relevant setting.
  • Experience of managing/mentoring staff.
  • Significant experience of managing staff
  • Experience of jointly managing and developing teams

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to assess, implement and evaluate programmes of care.
  • Ability to liaise effectively with various disciplines, relatives, patients and outside agencies.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise and organise patient care management.
