Job overview

We are recruiting for a Community Mental Health Nurse with the Central and East Bristol Assessment and Recovery Team

We are a welcoming and supportive  team based in Speedwell at our office that we share with Central Crisis Team. We cover the inner city, central and east Bristol localities and support a diverse local population presenting with complex mental health and social care needs.  

We are looking for an RMN with a passion for delivering high quality recovery focused interventions in a community setting. 

We can consider applicants for both full time (37.5hrs) and part time (22.5-30hrs) positions.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will  deliver specific interventions in line with the treatment pathway, including complex service users.

You will deliver care that is evidence based, reflecting current best practice and research (including NICE guidelines), demonstrating clinical excellence and high standards of professional practice to other staff. 

You will be required to contribute towards the planning, implementation and review of care alongside a multi-disciplinary team. 

You will have a commitment to working with service users creatively towards their identified recovery goals and to promote choice and self-management.

You will safely administration of medication via various routes including IM Long-Acting Injections. You will also monitor the side-effects of medication and service user adherence to medication regimen.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Community Mental Health Nurse role is suitable for Registered Nurses with a Mental Health Nursing qualification who have successfully completed preceptorship and have registered as a practice
supervisor and/or assessor.

You will need strong clinical skills in mental health assessment, safety
assessment and safety planning in-depth understanding of medication management and ability to provide therapeutic interventions. You will be expected to operate within legislative frameworks –
Mental Health Act 2007, The Mental Capacity Act 2005, The Care Act 2014 and other relevant health and social care legislation.

The post holder will deliver or advise on outstanding nursing care that reflects the values of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code and AWP’s commitment to trauma-informed practice. This includes fostering a culture of kindness, respect, and inclusion in every interaction.

Your role will involve leading on holistic assessments, collaboratively developing Personal Wellbeing Plans, and evaluating outcomes with service users, their families, and the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team. You act as a keyworker for patients, coordinating all aspects of care and communication for the person, their family members and carers, and the services that are involved. You will maintain regular contact with the person and their family members and carers and specify this in their Personal Wellbeing plan. You will support the physical and mental health of those in your care, uphold their human rights, and contribute to a safe, therapeutic environment.


You will also provide guidance and supervision to junior colleagues and students, modelling compassionate leadership and reflective practice. You will will be expected to provide mentorship for student nurses, provide preceptorship and supervision for Band 5 nurses and supervise other junior staff as directed Accurate and sensitive documentation will be a key part of your role, ensuring continuity and quality of care.

Education and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Mental Health Nurse with current registration and has successfully completed preceptorship
  • Professional knowledge acquired through degree/ diploma
  • Specialist knowledge across a range of nursing procedures and theory – Safety assessment, Safety planning, Safe medication practice, Basic counselling, de-escalation, Working with families, Mental Health Act, Care Act and mental Capacity ac
  • Practice supervisor and Practice Assessor
Desirable criteria
  • Post-graduate qualification in nursing or related discipline

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with people who experience mental health difficulties.
  • Enhanced understanding of Mental Health signs and symptoms and an understanding of how these may present in practice including recognition of impact on service user presentation and behaviour including risk factors.
  • Practical experience of providing high quality care and exceeding expectations.
  • Understanding of safe medication management practices.
  • Understanding the importance of Health and Safety.
  • Understanding of trauma informed approaches and current nursing practice.
  • Knowledge of current developments in mental health care in the community.
  • Understanding effective risk assessment and developing coproduced safety plans/risk Training in specific clinical interventions Evidence of QI work 11 management plans.
  • Understanding of and demonstrable practice within the NMC Code of Practice.
  • Working understanding of the Mental Health Act 1983, the Mental Capacity Act (2005), Care Act (2014).
  • Substantial experience at band 5.
  • Completed a relevant course on teaching and assessing in clinical practice or equivalent.
