Our team of Phlebotomists provides a blood-taking service for both inpatients and outpatients across several locations, including West Suffolk Hospital (WSH), Mildenhall Health Centre Hub, Newmarket Community Hospital including the CDC and Sudbury Community Health Centre. As the role involves working across multiple sites, the ability to travel independently between locations is essential.

The inpatient service operates seven days a week, while outpatient clinics run on weekdays, with Saturday morning sessions available at some sites.

Previous phlebotomy experience would be advantageous; however, we are keen to hear from individuals with the right attitude, enthusiasm and commitment to delivering excellent patient care. Full training will be provided for the successful candidate.

The post holder will be responsible for obtaining blood samples from inpatients and outpatients using venepuncture techniques, while also undertaking associated administrative and reception duties. You will need to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, good manual dexterity, and strong literacy and numeracy skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a valued member of the Phlebotomy team, responsible for obtaining blood samples by venepuncture from both inpatients and outpatients across a range of locations within West Suffolk Hospital and at community sites.

As a front-line member of staff, the post holder will play an important ambassadorial role, delivering a high-quality service and ensuring a positive experience for patients. There will also be opportunities to gain a broader understanding of Pathology services by supporting the work of other pathology departments and providing cover within Pathology Reception when required.

Key responsibilities include:

• Collecting blood samples by venepuncture from patients and working flexibly across a variety of locations to support service delivery, including Outpatient Phlebotomy, inpatient wards and the Macmillan Unit at West Suffolk Hospital, as well as community services at Sudbury Community Health Centre, Newmarket Community Hospital and Mildenhall Health Centre Hub. This may also include working at additional locations as the service develops.
• Undertaking blood sample collection will initially be under supervision whilst completing phlebotomy training and developing competence.
