The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a band 5 nurse to deliver our maternity vaccination programme and support smooth flow of patients using the outpatient’s service within our CQC Outstanding maternity service.
You will join a diverse multi professional team that take pride in team work and delivering truly individualised compassionate care. You will be responsible for delivering the maternal vaccination programme of Flu, Pertussis and RSV vaccines to pregnant women and ensuring all aspects of care relating to the administration, ordering and recording of vaccinations is undertaken. When not vaccinating, the job role will take on pre-assessment, phlebotomy, updating blood results and supporting consultant clinics.
You must hold NMC nurse registration. You will be expected to be able to show evidence of current practice/updating.
As elements of the vaccination programme will be provided at our maternity hubs, you should be car driver with access to your own transport.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will have overall responsibility for delivery of maternal vaccinations at Royal Surrey and surrounding community hubs. They will ensure efficient and effective administration of the maternal Flu, Pertussis and RSV vaccination programmes. They will work closely with the Maternity Vaccination Fail Safe Officer to maintain oversight of vaccination appointments, ordering of and ensuring adequate stock levels of vaccines available, complete GP reporting for administered vaccines and monthly returns for vaccinations given.
They will be responsible for ensuring all those eligible for the vaccination programme are offered the relevant vaccine and support maternity staff to increase awareness of healthy pregnancy choices to maternity service users. They will deliver daily vaccination clinics to ensure coverage, capacity and timeliness of vaccination. Clinics will be run on both the main Royal Surrey site and in community hubs. They will ensure all documentation with regards to vaccinations performed is accurate and support the vaccination failsafe officer to complete all GP and external provider reporting.
The postholder will support the midwifery team to provide efficient and seamless flow through midwifery and obstetric clinic. Support tasks include but not limited to; pre-operative assessment care to women undergoing planned cesarean sections, phlebotomy and administrative tasks (blood and specimen results reviews, updating maternal clinical records)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Professional Duties

- Be visible and accessible to service users and their families. Ensure all pregnant women/pregnant people have the opportunity to seek information, help and support regarding vaccination in pregnancy
- Advocate for women/people in our care, empowering them to promote their own health and wellbeing

Clinical Duties
Competent in all aspects of immunisation including knowledge of contraindications to specific vaccines and the recognition and treatment of anaphylaxis.
Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure eligible service users are offered timely vaccinations in line with national guidance.
- Perform robust health assessment prior to vaccination, including but not exclusive to – previous vaccination reactions and immunisation history.
- Have responsibility for the oversight of vaccination appointments. To ensure all vaccination clinic sessions are being utilised efficiently and effectively. Reduce loss of capacity by cancelling/rearranging appointments when necessary, ensuring all patients are seen with the recommended timeframes.
- Have oversight of the ordering of and ensuring adequate stock levels of vaccines available. Liaising with pharmacy. Ensuring Vaccination Failsafe officer is aware of planned vaccinations or changes to vaccination campaigns that could impact supply.
- Ensure GP reporting for administered vaccines is completed and monthly returns for vaccinations given in a timely manner.
- Responsible for checking the quality of data entered onto the maternity systems and filing systems, to ensure that all national standards are maintained and reportable, including ensuring that vaccine batch numbers are recorded under the correct patient.
- To report incidents using the Trust electronic incident reporting system
- Responsible for organising plans to ensure that all vaccinations are offered in line with NHSE guidance.
- Run effective and efficient vaccination clinics, safely preparing and administering maternal vaccinations for Pertussis, Flu and RSV as indicated
- Encourage vaccination uptake by proactively approaching women attending antenatal clinics to discuss vaccination options and encourage drop in in attendance
- Address any concerns and ensure consent and clinical assessment is completed and recorded within the Maternity EPR (BadgerNet) prior to vaccination.
- Assume responsibility for the safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with the Trust policies for medicines management.
- Ensure the correct syringes, needles and all other necessary equipment pertaining to safe vaccination is used.
- Ensure correct disposal of syringes and sharps as per Trust clinical waste policy.
- Ensure safe, efficient transport of vaccine stock when providing clinics away from base, including appropriate storage of vaccines for transport.
- Support the Maternity Vaccination Nurse Failsafe Officer in maintaining reportable databases and the development of vaccination data analysis.
- Ensure all patients who attend and access maternity vaccination services are captured within the relevant EPR systems (Badgernet) and national/local databases as appropriate. With patient’s information, appointments and vaccinations offered/declined and administered accurately recorded.
- Support the Maternity Vaccination Nurse Failsafe Officer to implement and carry out failsafe checks for the vaccination programmes under the supervision of the ANC Manager and Antenatal Screening Coordinator.
- To liaise and correspond with the appropriate external service providers as well as GP’s as appropriate
- To be responsible for answering telephone enquiries and referring to other members of the Department as appropriate and when required contact and refer to other trusts / external providers.
- To work closely with the Maternity Vaccination Failsafe Officer to provide detailed analysis to the Antenatal Matron and Antenatal Screening Fail Safe Officer for the quarterly ANNB Screening KPI’s and annual reporting.
- Attend MDT meetings with the Senior team, AN Screening Coordinators, ANC Manager and Maternity Vaccination Failsafe Officer regarding patients care and any external regional / national update meetings.
- To liaise closely with the Maternity Vaccination Failsafe Officer, ANC Manager, community team leaders to ensure smooth running of the vaccination clinics.
- Lead the development and completion of outpatient surveys, in support of the vaccination service.
- To act as the main point of contact in relation to the maternity vaccination programmes in the absence of the ANC Manager or Maternity Vaccination Failsafe Officer.
- To assist in the investigation of complaints or serious incidents relating to the maternity vaccination service.
- Undertake all necessary clinical investigations to women and pregnant people attending clinic for pre-assessment appointments prior to elective caesarean section
- Support the midwifery team to review blood & specimen results daily, updating the maternal clinical record and escalating any abnormal results to an appropriate clinician.
- Take an active role in supporting the health promotion of pregnant women, providing advice and guidance on ensuring a healthy pregnancy and early postnatal journey in conjunction with the midwifery team.
Management Responsibilities
- Work with line managers to lead and implement change from national and local service developments.
- Participate in the orientation and training of new members of staff ensuring vaccination E-learning modules are complete and they are able to competently use any relevant systems to record the administration of vaccinations.
- Act as a point of contact for new users to access vaccination training, competency and recording.
- Support creation and maintain database of vaccination competent professionals, including update and PGD training. Coordinate the completion of relevant e-learning modules.
- Recognise and reflects on barriers to effective communication and modify behaviour in response.
- To be courteous & helpful to patients, families/carers, colleagues and all users to the trust.
