Job overview
A Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist job opportunity has arisen within our Breast CNS Team. We are looking for Nurse with special interest in supporting with Living Well and Beyond Breast Cancer.
The successful candidate will manage a workload of patients within the Breast Supported Self-Management Follow Up Programme. This will include provision of Nurse Led services such as End of Treatment, Holistic Needs Assessment, Management of Treatment Induced Symptoms while working closely with the Primary Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Team and the wider Multiprofessional Breast Team.
We provide a holistic, patient - focused service, delivering evidence based information and advice to patients who have completed hospital-based treatment for primary breast cancer, supporting them and their families with their follow up care.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking to appoint a Registered Nurse, who has the essential experience, motivation, and communication skills. At least two years’ experience nursing cancer patients in a Surgical, Oncology, Research or similar area would be required. Experienced Clinical Nurse Specialists for other tumour sites, who can bring transferable skills, are also encouraged to apply. The candidates should ideally have a Degree or be working towards one in a relevant field.
Our team is well motivated and established in a dynamic and supportive MDT, who see around 400 new cases each year.

· Provide evidence based clinical care, advice and support to breast patients, their families and carers.
· Offer nurse-led specialist clinics to patients referred by GPs, other specialities or within the breast team. These clinics include Family History Assessment, BRCA Carrier Service, End of Treatment Holistic Assessment, Complex wound management; Treatment induced symptoms management, Prosthetic Fitting and Patient Initiated Follow Up Service.
· Advanced nursing assessment skills are required as well as autonomous assessment, decision making, in care planning and delivering treatments appropriately.
· Communicate very sensitive breast cancer related information to both patients their relatives and carers. This will include imparting information concerning a diagnosis of breast cancer, pathology results and prognostic information, as well as information about treatment options, including treatment options that may be palliative.
· Provide empathy and understanding and enable breast cancer patients to voice their concerns; to be involved in the planning of patients care and act as patient advocate where necessary.
· Participate in health promotion relating to breast disease/cancer to patients, carers, staff and the general public.
· Participate in recruitment to clinical breast cancer trials.
· Undertake research and audit in the breast care services provided, evaluate findings and implement change, where appropriate.
· Develop specialist programmes of care, write and update protocols for breast care nursing services, and set standards of care by implementing national standards of care for women with breast cancer.
· Act as mentor and facilitator to nursing (pre and post registration), medical and allied medical professionals as part of their training.
· Advise, educate and update the local breast cancer support group(s) and other associated voluntary bodies.
· Attend surgical clinics and oncology clinics; liaising with departments to facilitate and coordinate the care of patients undergoing treatments for breast cancer.
· Deliver research and evidence based education and advice and liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and allied health professionals

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered general nurse.
- First level degree or working towards it.
Desirable criteria
- Breast Care Nursing Course (or equivalent experience).
- Advanced communication course (or willing to undertake).
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of breast disease and management
- Significant experience working with patients with Breast Cancer – in either a surgical, oncology or research setting.
- CPD - Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
- Experience of mentoring – nursing students and junior medical staff.
Skills and Capabilities
Essential criteria
- Analytical Skills Problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands
- Planning Skills Demonstrated capability to plan over short, medium and long term timeframes. Depending upon the role and its seniority, this will vary. Able to prioritise own work effectively.
- Communication skills – able to communicate complex and sometimes distressing cancer related information to patients and relatives
- Ability to make decisions autonomously, when appropriate and know when to consult colleagues. Aware of own limitations.
- IT Skills, working knowledge of Microsoft Office with intermediate keyboard skills, use of email and other hospital patient management systems. Appropriate training will be given if required.
