Job overview
The Alcohol Liaison Team are seeking a registered nurse (RGN/RMN) to join our small but impactful team at band 6 level, in a full time post at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. This presents an exciting opportunity to become part of an established and dedicated professional team covering Monday to Friday at the RSCH site, working across all specialties within the hospital.
We are looking for either, a Band 6 Nurse looking for an opportunity to experience a specialist nurse role, or an experienced Band 5 Nurse looking for an opportunity to develop into a Band 6 role. There will be training/ shadowing opportunities within the post. Though much of the role is independent working, colleagues within the team will support you with time dedicated for daily team catch-ups/ monthly staff supervision. There is also a lead consultant for our service who supports the team with complex patient cases.
Main duties of the job
To support the development and delivery of dedicated hospital service for patients with alcohol use disorders and/or alcohol dependency at the Royal Surrey foundation Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• Supporting the ALN lead development of the Hospital Alcohol Liaison Service.
• Pro-actively identifying patients with harmful alcohol use.
• Working to reduce unplanned alcohol related admissions and attendances to the Hospital setting
• Supporting a patient throughout their hospital admission.
• Complete comprehensive assessment of patients alcohol use.
• Provide support for monitoring and guidance on treatment of patients experiencing acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome
• Proactive involvement in assessment and planning of care for patients identified for surgery/procedures who have alcohol dependence
• Liaise with and refer to community alcohol services locally and nationally.
• Be involved with MDT discussions involving a wide range of internal/ external community services to support care of complex and high intensity user patients.
• Identifying and supporting family/ friends and carers of patients with alcohol misuse
• Carry out staff training on identification and brief advice for patients with hazardous alcohol use and the trust guidelines on management and treatment of acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome and related complications.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to degree level OR equivalent level of experience
- NMC registered RGN/RMN
Desirable criteria
- Non-medical prescriber
- Car Driver
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of specialist area, acquired through post graduate experience – caring for patients with alcohol use disorders
- CPD - Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development
- Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy/national guidance/CQC/ and appreciate the implications of this on engagement within the field of alcohol dependence.
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
