Sister/Charge Nurse - Acute Medical Unit

Band 6

Job overview

Junior Sister / Charge Nurse (Band 6) – Acute Medical Unit (AMU)

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic Junior Sister / Charge Nurse to join our Acute Medical Unit at Wexham Park Hospital. We have both full-time and part-time opportunities available within our busy 38-bedded unit.

This is an exciting leadership role where you will play a key part in delivering high-quality patient care while supporting the day-to-day operational management of the unit. You will provide clinical leadership to the nursing team, fostering a positive, collaborative environment that promotes excellence in patient outcomes and staff development.

A central aspect of the role is the coordination, allocation, and effective management of patient flow within AMU Green. You will work closely with the Emergency Department to facilitate timely admissions and ensure smooth flow through all acute areas, helping to maintain safe and efficient patient care pathways.

You will liaise with senior colleagues across emergency and acute medicine, as well as the site management team, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to think creatively, solve problems proactively, and manage conflict with professionalism is essential.

This role is ideal for a motivated nurse ready to take the next step into leadership, who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is committed to delivering high standards of care.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 6 Junior Sister / Charge Nurse, you will provide high-quality, patient-centred care while coordinating the patient journey and supporting safe and timely patient flow across the department.

You will act as a visible clinical leader, promoting effective teamwork within the multidisciplinary team and ensuring care is delivered in line with professional values of safety, compassion, and respect. You will advocate for patient safety, escalate concerns appropriately, and manage medicines in accordance with Trust policy.

You will support and develop junior staff, contribute to appraisals, and act as a role model in clinical practice. The role also includes deputising for the Ward Manager when required.

In addition, you will contribute to workforce planning, support service improvements, and maintain knowledge of key policies, including the Mental Capacity Act and DoLS, while engaging in your own professional development.
