Job overview

As a Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients across the Trust’s hospitals and community services. Working under the supervision of registered nurses and other healthcare professionals, you will support the day-to-day care of patients, helping to maintain their comfort, dignity, and wellbeing throughout their stay.

 As a key member of the multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the smooth running of the ward or department, support clinical tasks within your competence, and ensure excellent communication with patients, families, and staff.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist members of the multi-disciplinary team to maintain patient's fundamental  needs and ensure patient safety.
  • To assist with a range of non-clinical duties .
  • To work under the supervision of registered staff and Healthcare assistants and to provide support in the delivery of quality care for patients. 
  • To provide a full range of support functions in a department/theatre or clinical environment. 
  • To ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person-centred care principles.

Some of the key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide excellent customer care skills to ensure patients come first.
  • Act on own initiative when delivering the  care  requirements. Seeking guidance of a Healthcare Assistant or Registrant where required to ensure that the patient's health, safety, wellbeing, and dignity are always maintained.
  •  To act as an advocate for patients within the department/unit.
  • To follow FHFT guidelines, policies, and procedures in maintaining safe working practices for patients and colleagues experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs, or principles. 
  • Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the individuals.
  • Ensure own actions help to maintain quality and act as Chaperone for patients.
  • Respond to patient requests for non-clinical information to improve communication by making clinical nursing colleagues aware of all requests. 
  • Establish and maintain communication with people on routine and operational matters. 
  • To put patients at the centre of your thinking, listen and positively respond to your patient's feedback reporting concerns to a Registered Nurse where necessary.
  •  To act always in a manner which, promotes positive working relationships and maintains the professional image of the Trust.
  • To adhere to all Trust policy and procedures .

Essential criteria
  • Previous work experience which includes team working, communicating with staff and colleagues, and understanding of work practices.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a health care environment.
  • Experience of dealing with the public.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to learn new skills.
  • Knowledge of how to respect individuality and diversity of patients, their carers, and your colleagues.
  • Good Customer care skills
  • Ability for caring for people with compassion.
  • Basic numeracy skills
  • Clear and accurate written/verbal English 6 NA5 - Matched January 2025 communication
  • Good basic hygiene skills (e.g., food handling, hand washing etc.)
  • Able to listen effectively and demonstrate an empathetic /sensitive approach and be able to communicate effectively and compassionately to colleagues, staff, and patients and their family/carers/visitors.
  • Ability to follow a clear instruction and accept constructive professional feedback.
  • Ability to work within a team
  • Punctual and reliable

Qualifications and values

Essential criteria
  • ce of general education e.g. which includes English and Maths or functional skills Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Willingness to work towards and complete the Healthcare Support Worker level 2 apprenticeship
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of personal care and related procedures
  • Vocational qualification at level 2 or equivalent relevant experience
