Job overview

To be responsible for undertaking a wide range of phlebotomy and administrative duties. To provide general support to meet the needs of patients, following policy and procedures. Duties can include but are not limited to, acting as a central point of contact for patients as well as distributing information / messages and enquires for the clinical team, liaising with multidisciplinary team members and external agencies such as secondary care and community service providers, processing both electronic and paper copy patient records, dealing with appointment system, and patients’ blood pressure, pulse rate, height and weight.

This job will require working across the following NPC practices; Morpeth, Pegswood, Lynemouth and Newbiggin

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a high standard of customer care to patients, relatives & visitors.
  • Ensure that all stationary & clinical stock levels are maintained.
  • Notify a GP of any significant patient issues.
  • Ensure full and accurate recording in the patient’s computerised records.
  • Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient interventions.
  • Working under the direct supervision of the senior practice nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients only as the result of a direct referral from a GP, nurse practitioner or practice nurse.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Blood Collection: Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques to collect blood samples from patients.
  • Patient Interaction: Greet and identify patients, explain the procedure, and ensure their comfort during the blood draw.
  • Sample Handling: Properly label blood samples with patient information and test orders, and prepare them for transportation to laboratories.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of blood collection and patient information, ensuring compliance with health regulations.
  • Safety and Hygiene: Follow safety protocols and infection control standards to maintain a clean and safe working environment

Qualifications / Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • Courses and experience that demonstrate transferable skills i.e.(venipuncture)
  • Venepuncture course
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL
  • NVQ level 2 or higher in Healthcare/Customer service/Administration
  • NSTS Training
  • Basic Life Support, Moving & Handing & Fire training
  • Child Protection training

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Previous care experience preferably in a healthcare setting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of EMIS or SystemOne
  • Experience of Microsoft Office
