Job overview
An exciting opportunity exists for a dynamic, pro-active and highly motivated individual to join the Newcastle Hospitals Colorectal Cancer nursing team, as a band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist. You will be joining a well-established and growing team of Colorectal Nurse Specialists who provide an excellent service to patients who have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and who require a comprehensive programme of support throughout their diagnosis, treatment and beyond.
A key part of our Nursing and Midwifery strategy is to have an empowered and skilled, workforce, who are responsive to the needs of patients. We achieve this by ensuring staff feel supported, clinically, academically and emotionally through Continued Professional Development, Clinical Supervision and the Trust Professional and Leadership behaviours
If you have excellent clinical and communication skills, attention to detail and a proactive nature, as well as the ambition to be responsive in supporting change and improving practices within the colorectal team, this could be a new career challenge to develop and expand your skills and we would like to hear from you and receive your application.
Main duties of the job
The role will require someone with a high level of interpersonal and communication skill and the ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team. As a CNS for Colorectal cancer you will be the patient key worker and support the patient and their families throughout their cancer pathway. You will be involved in patient care pre and post operatively as well as post discharge.
Working as part of the multidisciplinary team you will be actively encouraged to assist with service development and improve the patient experience based on emerging and best practice models of care which is responsive to patient feedback and audit. The role will be instrumental in providing a high level of patient care and supporting excellent patient outcomes.
You will be expected to meet the essential criteria and processes, including some experience within colorectal surgery, as outlined in the job description and person specifications. You will also be expected to be flexible to the needs of the service. The role will also include working with the wider colorectal team supporting our surgical and IBD patients pre and post surgery to ensure optimal outcomes are achieved.

· The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse specialist as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.
· Within the sphere of specialist practice:
o Is working towards advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice.
o Contributes to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients.
o Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
