Are you a highly motivated and enthusiastic Midwife who would like to develop your knowledge, skills and competency by practicing within a dynamic maternity unit in the North East of England?

The Maternity Unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary has recently been rated as Outstanding by the CQC for the second time and would like to hear from both newly qualified midwives and those with previous experience. For all successful candidates we have a comprehensive preceptorship programme which involves supported orientation in all clinical areas and includes working with our community midwifery teams.

We support women in their birth choices; for home birth, birth in the integrated midwifery-led unit or the main obstetric unit.

Diverse experience can be gained in holistic midwifery-led care for low risk women and babies in addition those requiring more complex and shared care. The posts will be rotational and include practice in antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care. Community Midwives rotate within the Birthing Centre as well as provide an on call home birth service.

There is also an exciting opportunity for driven and skilled midwives to be part of the new Continuity of Carer team who will provide full continuity of care to a cohort of women in Newcastle. This is in line with the local and national service developments reflecting the recommendations outlined in the ‘Better Births’ National Maternity review.

We have a fantastic 12-roomed Birthing Centre (featuring 5 birthing pools) which will provide you with the opportunity to develop confidence and a range of intrapartum skills including caring for women using water for labour and birth. We provide care for a large number of high risk women and babies and as a tertiary referral centre will provide also you with opportunities to develop your professional practice working closely with a multidisciplinary team. We have a large team of Specialist Midwives who can provide you clinical support and are a great educational and clinical resource. In addition our team of Practice Support Midwives will provide advice, guidance and clinical support during your intrapartum placements.

We have a number of Directorate-based educational and training opportunities such as clinical skills training, public health in practice, infant feeding and care of the vulnerable neonate.
