Job overview

The post holder is required to work in support of qualified nurses and other professionals to provide optimum patient care, ensuring adherence to Trust policy at all times. 

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of activity-based patient groups and to work on occasional individual work with patients. Supporting the multi-disciplinary team in providing a comprehensive programme of activity to meet the needs of the client group.

Main duties of the job

  1. Responsible for own actions, ensuring all patient interactions/observations are communicated to trained staff.
  2. Show dignity and respect in dealings with patients, staff and visitors.
  3. Undertake agreed clinical and non-clinical tasks following training, ensuring referral to appropriately trained staff as necessary.  
  4. Organise own daily workload e.g. identification of suitable patients to attend the day room and take part in activities. 
  5. Provide instruction (verbal and non-verbal) to patients on a range of activities as part of the activities programme.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To develop a rapport with patients, to encourage and motivate them to participate in activity (either group or individual work).
  • To contribute to the development and implementation of a creative and innovative activities programme responsive to the varying needs of the patient group.
  • To observe general behaviour, abilities and responses of patients and report them verbally to the multi-disciplinary team and within the patient record.
  • Utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient data.
  • Support staff and patients exposed to difficult situations arising in the clinical area e.g after receipt of bad news or following an unexpected event.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times. 
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • NVQ Level 2 in care or willing to work towards • Demonstrate basic numeracy and literacy skills
Desirable criteria
  • • Willingness to undertake NVQ Level 3

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Relevant clinical experience with gerontology patients
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of facilitating groups in activities

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of the risks and needs associated with caring for gerontology patients
Desirable criteria
  • • An understanding of current issues relating to the NHS

Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Patient focused • Good communication and interpersonal skills • Capable of dealing with sensitive and distressing situations • Able to use own initiative • Basic IT skills
