Trainee Emergency Care Practitioner

Job overview
We are seeking motivated and experienced healthcare professionals to join our team as Trainee Emergency Care Practitioners, within the Urgent and Emergency Care service.
Working alongside Doctors, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, and fellow ECP's/ENP's you will play a key role in delivering high quality timely care to patient presenting with minor illness and injury. This is a fast paced, independent role, requiring excellent clinical reasoning and descision-making skills.
The Emergency Practitioner within the Urgent and Emergency Care service (UEC) will use specialist knowledge and skills to independently provide healthcare to a select group of patients with minor illnesses or injuries and develop a ‘no wait philosophy’ and support ‘see and treat’ streams .
The Emergency Practitioner is a highly skilled practitioner with a wealth of knowledge and experience and accountable for the total episode of care of the patient including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and/or referral and discharge, administering medication under the Trust Patient Group Directions.
The post holder will be required to work across all 3 sites (Minor Injuries Unit, Rugby Urgent Treatment centre and Coventry City Urgent Treatment Centre where required.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
- The post holder will be working as a trainee ECP within a busy Minor Injury and Illness Unit and Urgent Treatment Centre under a scope of practice; seeing, treating and independently discharging patients as required.
- The post holder will work with Senior EP colleagues to deliver a high quality, effective and sustainable service.
- The post holder will undertake a training post and is supported to complete a Minor Injury and Minor Illness University course with a EP portfolio to work towards to becoming a qualified EP.
- The post holder will work in good partnership with multi-disciplinary team. Teaching and education program for the EP is provided annually. This post will be rotational across two sites.
Successful Candidates will be supported to achieve the necessary qualifications to become a Qualified ECP. Once achieved you will be able to apply for Qualified ECP positions should they become available

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
- Using advanced history taking skills, obtains a patient history in a systematic manner including pertinent physical, social, emotional, psychological or environmental factors.
- Using advanced physical assessment skills, undertakes physical examination as appropriate, using techniques of observation, inspection, auscultation, palpation and percussion, including the safe use of diagnostic equipment as appropriate.
- Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory and radiology investigations in order to distinguish between normal and abnormal findings on history and physical examination and relates these findings to possible diagnosis.
- Makes clinical decisions using analytical and judgmental skills to reach a diagnosis and effectively communicates the information regarding these decisions, care pathways and policy to the patients/carers and multi professional team.
- Develops and implements a plan of healthcare management which will include any necessary treatment and appropriate referral for further evaluation or follow up care to any member of the multidisciplinary team. Takes clinical responsibility for the diagnosis, management and discharge/referral/transfer of the patient and offers health promotion strategies where appropriate.
- Utilise and ensure others utilise information and IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data. Responsible for documenting all clinical notes both computerised and paper based.
- Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with colleagues and other members of the multidisciplinary and multi professional teams to develop and promote the unique contribution to patient care provided by EP’s.
- Remains up to date with clinical and professional developments and own learning, recognising limitations within own professional knowledge and practice.
- Participate in an ongoing programme of audit to monitor and evaluate the service and support the implementation of change as appropriate.
- Support the development and delivery of specialist teaching programmes for the Emergency Practitioner team in relation to their area and practice focus.
- Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient’s dependency/clinical need.
- Support patients, carers and others during difficult and potentially highly distressing and emotional situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
