Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Haematology team at University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS trust as a Band 3 Haematology Healthcare Support Worker in our Day Unit and Outpatients department.

The Haematology Healthcare Support worker will assist Doctors and nurses in providing specialist, high quality expert care and support patients (and their carers) with Haematological conditions, delivering holistic, patient centred care according to their changing health care needs.

The applicant should have excellent communication skills and should be able to work with multiprofessional teams.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

  1. Responsible for own actions, ensuring all patient interactions/observations are communicated to the appropriate healthcare practitioner.
  2. Show dignity and respect in dealings with patients, staff and visitors.
  3. Undertake agreed clinical and non-clinical tasks, extending range following training in defined areas. Ensure referral to trained staff and documentation is completed as appropriate.
  4. Organise own daily workload and undertake tasks independently as well as part of the team whilst also ensuring adherence to department handover.
  5. Assist with personal patient care needs.
  6. Complete training and assessment in defined practical skills to aid the trained staff in delivery of optimum patient management e.g. ECG and venepuncture.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ensure stock levels are maintained by utilising ordering systems and assist the trained staff in ordering of specialist supplies and equipment.
  • Checking patients observations which includes blood pressure, heart rate, Temperature, oxygen saturations and weights.
  • Taking blood and urine samples.
  • Assist the designated trained staff with link nurse support and cascade training.
  • Supporting nurses on the Haematology Day Unit and also be able to work with minimum supervision on the Haematology outpatient department.
  • Support less experienced members of staff in their orientation to the ward and role
  • Utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient data
  • Support the team in expected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need
  • Support staff and patients exposed to difficult situations arising in the clinical area e.g after receipt of bad news or following an unexpected event.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and patients from known hazards.

  • • NVQ Level 3 in care • Demonstrate basic numeracy and literacy skills

  • • An understanding of Trust Policy and Procedure

Skills

  • • Competent in defined practical skills (e.g. venepuncture) or willingness to undertake • Patient focused. • Good communication and interpersonal skills • Capable of dealing with sensitive and distressing situations • Able to use initiative. • Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • • Phlebotomy competent.
