Job overview
To support the Emergency Eye Referral Service and Ophthalmology Outpatients Service in clinic 9, Outpatients Department University Hospital and Macular Unit at Rugby St Cross Hospital. The service runs 6 days a week Monday-Saturday with some late shifts expected as part of your working week. The post holder will work closely with the wider Ophthalmology team to provide leadership and support to the team.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with the wider Ophthalmology team to supply and deliver specialist ophthalmic care to paediatric and adult patients in EERS and outpatients. Responsible for conducting essential tests and investigator procedures to assist in diagnosing eye conditions. Escalating concerns beyond their scope of practice. Assisting the nursing team with assessing, planning, implementing, monitoring care and providing advice and guidance to patients, their careers and other professionals. As such, they will provide and receive complex, sensitive, confidential and emotive information that requires empathetic handling and management. The post holder will work under the supervision of the Registered Nurses and wider clinical team to support the day to day running of the service, delivering care to the patients and supporting careers and relatives, undertaking training for Visual Acuity, Measuring Intra ocular Pressures (IOP) with handheld device, Colour vision and checking for Relative Afferent pupillary Defect RAPDs, A variety of other diagnostic tests, Blood pressures, Pulse and temperature and documenting findings in electronic patient records as well as administration of ocular medications once competent under trust governance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- The Band 3 Technician will work closely with clinical team in the emergency and outpatient departments. Acting as a mentor/buddy to new staff and taking part in service development, supporting the team with providing care
- Taking part in competency-based training including but not limited to; Visual Acuity, Intra ocular pressure, Colour vison testing and Relative Afferent pupillary Defect, using Pentocam, pachymetry, measurement of glasses using the focimeter and measuring a patient’s refractive status using an auto refractor
- Instillation of eye drops following completing a competency course under supervision of the nursing staff
- Completion and assessment of competency course for Oculoplastic procedure
- Completion and assessment of competency course for Corneal Cross-linking procedures
- To work within the Eye Emergency Service responding to emergencies, supporting the team, reporting & escalating any concerns or delays in a timely manner to the RN
- Managing environmental including but not limited to; the setting up clinics, maintaining cleaning standards and IPC, stock control, including ordering through the trust procurement process
- Can communicate with a range of other staff of all disciplines, including liaison with other health care providers within the Trust and primary care settings regarding diagnosis and treatment advice.
- Supporting the staff within the wider ophthalmology team and ensuring the fair allocation of work where necessary.
- Completes all associated documentation and record
- Actively participates and supports the nursing team in the setting, monitoring and evaluation of standards of care in partnership with other members of the ophthalmic multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of holistic, evidence based, clinically effective specialist servic
- Ability to identify own training/knowledge deficits and upskill to provide the specialist care required in the Ophthalmic speciality, supporting new and existing staff to become competent and capable practitioners.
- Actively takes part in education and training to develop skill
- Supports the clinical team with the maintenance of ophthalmic equipment, reporting/escalating any concerns, damage or breakages of equipment as a priority, ensuring that the service is not compromised due to faulty/broken equipmen
- Liaise with staff in the wider ophthalmic team discuss governance issues and have an active role in assisting clinical governance and service development.
- Actively and positively participate in service and departmental meetings to aid service delivery and improve service.
- To be aware of, and comply with, the fire policy and procedures for control of infection.
- To adhere to the provisions in the Health and Safety at Work Act and to work within the guidelines of hospital policies and procedures.
- To always maintain confidentiality of patients and their relatives.
- Maintain responsibility for own professional and specialist development and registration
- Participate in regular performance appraisal +/- associated staff as required.
