Job overview

To Lead, Manage, Coordinate and Support the Ophthalmology Outpatients Clinics, across all Ophthalmic subspecialities, at University Hospital Coventry and Rugby St Cross hospital demonstrating all the trust values.

To provide advice and support to the multi-disciplinary team involved in caring for patients in the Outpatient setting. You will be expected to set and maintain high standards of care in line with Trust vision & values.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

  1. Provide expert daily leadership and support to all levels of staff in the Ophthalmology Outpatients Clinic 
  2. Manage and co-ordinate staffing day to day and in advance, to ensure effective use of resources across the Ophthalmology Outpatients Clinic This includes responsibility for the duty rota, devising the off duty and considering bank usage. 
  3. To participate and ensure that all staff in the area undergo an annual appraisal using the personal development review documentation (PDR). 
  4. To support staff with CPD activities and to promote teaching and training regularly in house and courses outside the trust. 
  5. Assist alongside clinical nurse manager in the appropriate management of staff performance, conduct and sickness absence is in line with Trust policy. 
  6. Be aware of department budget (pay and non-pay) ensuring effective use of resources. Have an insight into the financial balance. 
  7. Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, students, and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, incidents, faulty equipment, or inadequate standards of cleaning.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ensure all staff adheres to Trust Vision & Values. 
  • Act up for the Ophthalmology Out-patients clinical nurse manager in the absence as required. 
  • Advise on the level of nursing care and skill-mix for the department, and assist adjusting the work rotas where necessary to improve patient care. 
  • Undertake and evaluate variety of audits. 
  • Understand the clinical governance process and how your role feeds into this process. 
  • Investigate accidents and incidents in the department and take appropriate action using the DATIX reporting systems. 
  • Support the PALs and Complaints process; be able to deescalate patient concerns and complaints at the time of incidents or escalate if unable to find resolutions. 
  • Manage clinics to ensure that relevant documentation and results are available for each patient’s visit, ensuring the smooth running of the clinics. 
  • Demonstrate skills in multi-professional team working in which the leadership role responds to change. Utilise team leadership and team building skills to organize the safe and affective delivery of care. 
  • Demonstrates effective delegation and communication skills, ensuring that delegation is accompanied by empowerment. 
  • To have a good working relationship with other Outpatient departments and across all UHCW site to ensure consistency in practice affording optimal standards of quality. 
  • To be aware of developments in Ophthalmology and to undergo further training as required. 
  • To take lead in nurse lead clinics and perform procedures independently within own scope of practice and competency.
