Job overview
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Paediatric Orthopaedics to join our multidisciplinary team. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced practitioner to assist in carrying out clinical duties including triage, managing referrals, requesting and interpreting investigations. The tACP will work under the clinical supervision of the paediatric orthopaedic team to meet the capabilities and competencies required for the job outlined below.
Following completion of the MSC in advanced practice including the non-medical prescribing module, Individual competence and capability will be met in order to achieve a satisfactory level of competency. Upon completion of these requirements the trainee will progress to band 8a.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
The trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (tACP) will be an experienced registered Paediatric healthcare professional who has extensive experience of working within the acute setting at Band 6 level or above. The tACP will be expected to work towards advanced level clinical practice. The tACP will work under the clinical supervision from the Paediatric Orthopaedic Team, Paediatric medical team & Paediatric Consultant Nurse to meet the capabilities or competencies required for the job, outlined below.
The level of supervision will depend upon the tACP’s knowledge, skills and capability which is expected to increase during their development; the tACP must work within their own limitations and scope of practice. The tACP will develop and exercise a degree of autonomy and decision making in a context of complexity, uncertainty and varying levels of risk, holding accountability for their decisions, such cases should be included in their portfolio of evidence and discussed with their supervisor.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The tACP will be able to manage clinical care in partnership with the children, young people and their families responding to differences in cultures, demographics and populations. Utilising critical analysis and synthesis in dealing with complex problems across a range of settings, enabling innovative solutions to enhance people’s experience and improve outcomes. The tACP must successfully demonstrate core capabilities, specialty specific clinical competence and complete a recognised independent prescribing qualification, including annotation onto the professional Register, whilst working within their scope of practice and relevant legislative authority. This training must be completed within a five-year time frame.
The trainee is required to work a minimum of 30 hours (0.8 WTE) as per Health Education / NHS England guidance.
Clinical
- Co-ordinate the care of children and young people with a wide range of conditions including care of the critically unwell/injured child throughout their pathway with the multidisciplinary team and clinical services to ensure the effective management of this group of patients.
- To work within scope of practice alongside the paediatric medical/nursing team, fellow ACP’s and wider MDT caring for children and young people across the in-patient, out-patient and emergency department settings.
- Accountable for own actions in accordance with their professional regulatory body requirements.
- Will contribute to delivering corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
- Lead and deliver care across a variety of clinical settings such as outpatient, inpatient, virtual clinic, ward rounds, etc.
- Deliver clinical care according to national and local guidelines ensuring delivery of evidence-based care and working towards the Trust vision of providing a World Class Service.
- Assess and prioritise patients within the service to maintain quality care.
- Undertake an initial assessment to determine differential diagnosis, utilising advanced critical thinking and decision-making skills, deciding when necessary to refer to senior clinical colleagues
Communication
- Use the SBAR tool to escalate critically unwell or deteriorating patient which is outside of their scope of practice to more expert clinicians.
- Communicate complex information effectively to patients and carers, recognising the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding, including religious, cultural, and sexual orientation, and preferred ways of communicating are respected.
- Maintain effective communication with the multidisciplinary team, stakeholders and other services including providing constructive feedback as appropriate.
- Demonstrate advanced communication skills in breaking bad news and ability to support patients, family, and staff.
- Anticipate barriers to communication and take action to improve communication.
- Act as an advocate for patients, families and colleagues, de-escalating issues and managing concerns or complaints.
- Access sources of support, guidance and information in an acceptable format to all patients, recognising any difficulties and referring appropriately.
