Job overview
The Band 6 Renal Nurse is responsible for providing high-quality specialist nursing care to patients with acute and chronic kidney disease. The post holder will coordinate and manage patient care within the renal service, including haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplantation, and nephrology care pathways. The nurse will act as a clinical leader, supporting junior staff, promoting evidence-based practice, and ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients with renal conditions.
- Administer medications, intravenous therapies, and blood products in accordance with local policies.
- Recognise and manage deteriorating patients, escalating concerns appropriately.
- Support patients and families with education regarding kidney disease, dialysis, transplantation, and self-management.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records in line with professional standards.
- Act as nurse in charge of the ward when required.
- Supervise, support, and mentor Band 5 nurses, healthcare support workers, and students.
- Participate in staff appraisals, training and competency assessments as delegated.
- Assist in managing staffing levels and workload allocation.
- Promote a positive learning environment and contribute to staff development.
- Work alongside Renal MDT and taking part in daily board rounds to improve patient outcomes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- The successful candidate will be expected to act as a leader and role model to their colleagues.
- They will need to be able to work as nurse in charge whilst coordinating with bed managers and site team.
- The job role also entails ensuring safer staffing levels and providing support to staff on day to day basis.
- They will need to monitor clinical standards and implement change to improve patient safety. As part of this they will be expected participate in audits, patient safety investigations and complete incident reports.
- They will have knowledge of the Accreditation for Care Excellence framework and ensure these standards are implemented on the ward.
- There will also be a requirement to deputise for the Ward Manager where necessary and support the ward manager with managing staff attendance and performance.
