Main duties of the job

  • Special Care Dentistry provides preventive and treatment oral care services for people who are unable to accept routine dental care because of some physical, intellectual, medical, emotional, sensory, mental or social impairment, or a combination of these factors.
  • The post holder will support the clinical speciality to ensure the provision of a high standard of patient care and that all Trust policies and procedures are adhered to.  This will include chairside activity as well as supporting the Dental Management Team in the delivery of Dentistry training and development of the Service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ensure the radiology service is run efficiently and effectively and that all radiation safety requirements are met.
  • Qualified Dental Nurse with the NEBDN certificate in Dental Radiography, will be able to act under prescription as an IR(ME)R operator, to safely take intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs of patients. 
  • To ensure a Quality Assurance program is undertaken within the service.
  • To act as a Radiation Protection Supervisor support for the site and maintain good compliance with both local and national guidelines.
  • Alert Service's Radiation Protection Supervisors and the Dental Nurse Management Team to issues which may affect learning, development and clinical performance.
  • Prepare and participate in the annual performance review and appraisal.
  • Ensure continuous update of knowledge including IRMER, Local rules, IRR.
  • Reflect on performance within own role and professional boundaries and maintain a professional portfolio to reflect evidence-based practice.
  • Provide training to clinical staff on the use of equipment on site.

Person specification

Qualifications and Professional Training

Essential criteria
  • National Certificate for Dental Nurses or similar
  • Registered with the GDC
  • Post-certification Qualification in Dental Radiography
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership or Management Qualification
  • Post-certification Qualification in Special Care Dental Nursing, Conscious Sedation, Oral Health Certificate

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with patients with Special Care requirements, medically compromised, phobic or high risk.
Desirable criteria
  • Special care Dental Nursing in a community setting

Other

Essential criteria
  • Car driver / Owner willing to travel and work across all Coventry & Warwickshire Dental sites.

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of a range of Dental procedures - particularly Dental Radiography
  • Enthusiastic and motivated with the ability to motivate others
