Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 6 Dual diagnosis (Substance Misuse ) CPN within the Wolverhampton CMHT.

The Post holder will ensure that people with substance misuse problems are supported to engage with community drug and alcohol teams. The candidate will be proactive in reducing harm in line with the recovery agenda and advocate for service users in addressing their physical, mental health and social care needs. He/she will support outreach to Substance misuse services to improve access to services and improve networking and pathways between statutory services and community assets

Main duties of the job

  • Support staff in Developing strength-based recovery plans with individuals that are comprehensive, person-centred and individualised based on a clear assessment of the individual’s needs and circumstances.
  • Provide specialist knowledge to support the service to embed, review and participate in the development of a policy for the care of patients with dual diagnosis of mental health problems and alcohol or substance misuse that includes:
  • Liaison and shared protocols between mental health and substance misuse services to enable joint working;
    • Drug/alcohol screening to support decisions about care/treatment options;
    • Liaison between mental health, statutory and voluntary agencies;
  • To design, implement and monitor treatment plans with service users that address their needs in relation to mental health and substance misuse problems.
  • Ability to engage and manage service users with challenging behaviour
  • To provide outreach clinics within Substance misuse services to improve access pathways for people with potential Dual Diagnosis
  • To educate and give information to Service User and others in the care of the Service User on issues related to mental health problems and substance misuse.
  • To provide clinical care guidance for service users with drug and alcohol dependency issues including knowledge of Opiate Substitution Therapy and Alcohol Treatment Pathways in the Community.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a dual diagnosis lead for the CMHT , the post holder will ensure that people with substance misuse problems are supported to engage with community drug and alcohol teams.

To support service users to improve general health, including dietary needs and personal hygiene. 

To review and assess the needs of service users with a dual diagnosis of Serious Mental Illness 
(SMI) and Substance use.

To provide support in the community for individuals and families with the aim of helping them  to make the positive lifestyle changes that will aid their recovery.
To support and signpost individuals and families to engage with other supportive services.

To be proactive in reducing harm in line with the recovery agenda and advocate for service users in addressing their physical, mental health and social care needs

To support individuals and families to access appropriate treatment and recovery services.

Essential criteria
  • • NMC - RMN Registration
  • • Higher qualification at least to degree level in a relevant subject
  • Recent and relevant experience of working with clients experiencing issues with substance misuse
  • Experience of working within mental health services
  • Awareness of local and national influences on service provision for secondary mental health service users
Desirable criteria
  • Supporting staff in the day to day provision of clinical services
  • Experience and knowledge of treatment interventions for dual diagnosis patients
