Staff Nurse

NHS AfC: Band 5

Come and join us

We’re looking for people who share our values of compassion, accountability and optimism to help us provide high quality care for the patients, carers, families and communities we serve. We specialise in NHS mental health and learning disability services and we’re proud to make a difference every day.

At SPFT we put people first. We’ll do everything possible to help you feel respected, valued and included. You’ll have opportunities to learn, grow and gain new experiences to support your career, with access to lifelong learning and professional development.

We actively promote flexible working and understand how important work life balance is, especially in healthcare. Whether it’s part time hours, hybrid working or flexible start and finish times, we’ll explore what works for you and the role.

We recognise that AI is becoming part of daily life and you may choose to use it to help prepare your application. We welcome innovation but ask that anything you submit reflects your own abilities, experience and voice. AI can support how you describe your skills and experience, but it should never replace your own words as we want to get to know you.

We’re shaping a workplace where ideas are encouraged, technology supports you and everyone has a voice in how we improve. If that sounds like the kind of organisation you want to be part of, we’d love to hear from you.

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified or newly qualified Nurse, dedicated to mental health recovery, to join a forward-thinking patient centred service that is dedicated to staff development to provide the highest quality of care.

The Chichester Centre is a modern unit providing low secure services across 3 wards.  Each ward has a well-established MDT led by a ward manager.   We have a working together group (WTG) which meets fortnightly and includes service user representatives from each ward as well as staff.  The WTG take a lead on service improvement across the unit.

You will have opportunities to gain skills and experience across our three different settings.  As a nurse, you will work in collaboration with other professionals within the MDT and external agencies in a patient centred way.  We work to the principles of the “Secure Recovery Model” and the “See Think Act” (Royal College of Psychiatrists publication) in collaboration with the peer support programme.

Main duties of the job

  • To deliver a high standard of evidence based inpatient nursing care in the designated care group in partnership with the team, the service users and, where appropriate, their family.
  • To act as a primary nurse in the assessment of needs and organising of care.
  • To co-ordinate shifts and provide supervision for support workers and students.
  • To work within a team of nurses and other professionals who are committed to the delivery of a quality service.
  • To adopt a flexible approach to hours of duty, in order to meet the needs of the service over a 24-hour period.
  • To take charge of a designated clinical area and deputise as appropriate.
  • To represent the Ward Manager and/or care team, at appropriate forums and disseminate information as required.
  • To represent the clinical team perspective at multidisciplinary meetings and clinical reviews of patient care.
  • To be an active participant in the multi-disciplinary team, formulating care plans and utilising appropriate assessments.

Working for our organisation

Forensic mental health is a unique and fascinating field which provides both challenge and opportunity in abundance.

Being curious, creative, self-aware and assertive are important skills that you will build on, as you are often required to think ‘outside the box’.

We play a crucial part in supporting and advocating service users towards recovery, while maintaining the legal requirements within the MHA and of public protection.

Our Trust:

We provide mental health and learning disability care for all ages across Sussex and for children and young people in Hampshire.

We’d love you to join our organisation, rated ‘good’ overall and ‘outstanding’ for caring by the CQC. Our staff agree, with 82% recognising patient care as our top priority in our staff survey.

Other key survey results include:

  •    79% reporting feeling able to make suggestions to improve the work within their team.
  •    77% identifying the opportunities to show initiative in their roles.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To undertake assessments of individuals and their families and carers as appropriate to inpatient care, including service users presenting with high risk.
  • To develop care plans and discharge plans in collaboration with the service user and their families and carers.
  • In conjunction with the multi-disciplinary teams, assess and manage risks as identified through assessment.
  • To regularly review risk factors and work in conjunction with the MDT to modify care plans.
  • To act as the Primary Nurse for inpatient stay.
  • To ensure that clinical practice is evidenced based and consistent with relevant NICE guidelines and Trust policies and procedures.
  • To provide supervision of junior staff and student nurses where appropriate.
  • To maintain and contribute to standards of professional care, ethics, policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that all clinical records are maintained and that other systems and good practice, such as handovers, occur for all staff to communicate effectively.
