Job overview
Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust are excited to offer this new role for a specialist Perinatal Pelvic Health Midwife. This role will help ensure delivery of our ambition for all women to receive education and advice around pelvic health during their maternity journey.
The role will require close partnership working and collaboration with the Women’s Health physiotherapist service and the lead Consultant for the service, as well as partnership working with the Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS).
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be a champion for Perinatal Pelvic Health Service (PPHS) and they will be responsible for promoting good quality midwifery and obstetric led interventions, working in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to enhance prevention of pelvic health injury in pregnancy and birth including supporting the delivery of the Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury (OASI) bundle, identifying women at risk of pelvic floor injury and providing training and education for staff and service users around pelvic floor exercises.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· To be competent and confident in all areas of midwifery practice and act as an expert specialist resource in perinatal pelvic health, offering highly specialist advice to other midwives and medical staff.
· To support the development and implementation of PPHS within the organisation working with colleagues across the West Yorkshire and Harrogate LMNS
· Project manage implementation and delivery of the PPHS service
· To work closely with women’s physiotherapy services in the trust to deliver high quality, women centred Perinatal Pelvic Health Services
· To implement and provide specialist evidence-based care for women with childbirth related perineal trauma, OASI and pregnancy related bladder/bowel dysfunction.
· To act as a significant educational resource to health professionals in childbirth related perineal trauma, OASI and pregnancy related bladder/bowel dysfunction.
· To deliver pelvic health and perineal repair training for qualified midwives.
· To liaise with women’s health physiotherapists in providing training to midwives on pelvic floor muscle exercises in order that they can deliver appropriate preventive antenatal education for the women that they care for
· To lead in the development and promotion of Trust / National guidelines and protocols for women requiring perineal suturing and bladder care and OASI, adopting a multi professional approach.
· To improve governance, patient safety and continuity of care in women with obstetric pelvic floor injury
· To audit organisational performance and support associated action plans to address areas for improvement
· Present audit findings and service evaluations to relevant Trust and LMNS groups
· Challenge and escalate poor care, performance and complacency
· To promote education within maternity services to continue to improve intrapartum and postpartum perineal and bladder care, and to support further reduction in rates of perinatal pelvic health problems
· To work with and support the Obstetric team in the OASI/Perineal Urogynaecology service and to make contribution to the strategic direction of the OASI and perineal trauma service
· To work collaboratively with other professional providing care on the perinatal pathway including Midwives, Health Visitors, Physiotherapists, incontinence Nurses, gynaecology, colorectal and urogynaecology services.
· Provide a visible clinical leadership presence within the Trust and the wider LMNS PPHS network.
· Support improvements in and development of maternity services, to improve the experience for women, their families, and staff.
· Liaise with other agencies and professions, participating in multi-agency meetings to facilitate ongoing treatment and care.
· To collaborate with the Obstetric team in the development of care plans for women and birthing people with pelvic floor dysfunction
· Work with colleagues to ensure that women and their families receive appropriate information about pelvic health in a sensitive way
· Encourage a culture of trust and sensitive enquiry which supports disclosure of symptoms
· Understand the relationship between physical health and mental health and the wider impact on family and relationships, ensuring all needs are supported.
· Maintain a professional appearance in line with the Trust dress code
· To work in accordance with the NMC Rules and Code for nurses and midwives

· To promote a positive learning environment where lessons are learnt and changes implemented to ensure delivery of a quality service.

Essential criteria
- Current substantial clinical experience as a band 6 midwife
- Significant knowledge of the pelvic floor, research related to perineal suturing and risk/protective factors for perineal injury
- Evidence of working across a variety of midwifery settings
- Understanding of the principles and application of clinical governance
- Ability to act as a lead resource with expert knowledge of this speciality.
- Able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of multiagency/ multidisciplinary working
- Evidence of participation in service development projects
- A detailed working knowledge of national guidelines and current research relating to the care of repair of perineal/labial tearing during childbirth, and risk factors for and protective factors to reduce incidents of OASI
