Job overview
We are seeking a full time Band 6 Endocrine Specialist Nurse to join our team here at the Great Western Hospital.
You will be primarily in an outpatient setting, but also occasionally within the inpatient setting, delivering endocrine education and carrying out endocrine testing. You will work closely with the lead Endocrine Specialist Nurse and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional care, support, education and condition management to patients, their carers and family, for a variety of endocrine conditions.
Main duties of the job
1. To provide education and support to patients, their relatives and carers with a variety of endocrine conditions, through nurse clinics, and adhoc telephone/email enquiries.
2. To be responsible for Endocrine Dynamic Testing referrals and the management of the testing database including booking and testing preparation.
3. Responsible for completing Endocrine Dynamic Testing safely within local and national guidelines/ protocols and to follow up the results including the completion of test proformas.
4. To be involved with the development and implementation of an Endocrine Nurse inpatient service.
5. To provide support for patients through email and phone support.
6. Communicating and liaising with the multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless and timely high quality care provision to patients.
7. Teach patients, their relatives or carers how to administer specialist endocrine medications e.g. emergency Hydrocortisone injections, growth hormone injections. Providing patient reviews and updates to the teaching as required.
8. To work autonomously, managing individual caseload whilst prioritising work and continually reassessing workload.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
9. To use IT support systems to ensure that records are kept which support clinical need, and enable audit and evaluation of the service whilst safeguarding patients’ rights and confidentiality.
10. To work closely with the lead endocrine nurse specialist, consultants and help facilitate regular MDT meetings to ensure patient treatment is effective and remains appropriate. Identifying when treatment requires changing and seeking appropriate support to facilitate this when outside of own scope of practice.

Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse
- Evidence of training at degree level or equivalent with ongoing continuous professional development
- Evidence of Venepuncture and Cannulation training
Desirable criteria
- Previous Endocrine Specialist Nurse Experience
- Completion or evidence of undertaking Independent Nurse Prescribing
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive post qualification nursing experience
- Experience in IT skills including the use of computerised systems for accessing patient information, maintaining databases, clinical notes and letters
- Experience with effective communication, being a service advocate and effective organisational skills
- Experience in Counsel & support of patients with on-going physical and psychosocial problems
Desirable criteria
- Experience of managing patients with endocrine conditions
Skills
Essential criteria
- Up to date knowledge of nursing theory, best practice and an understanding of its application in clinical practice
- Understanding of equality & diversity and its application to managing self, staff and patients within own area
- Understanding of NMC’s The Code and the requirements for practice & behaviour and its application to the management of staff and self
- Understanding of Health and Safety of patients, staff and visitors
Desirable criteria
- Experience and knowledge of carrying out a variety of Endocrine Dynamic Tests
- Experience and knowledge of a wide range of Endocrine conditions
