We are looking to employ a Band 5 Scrub Nurse or ODP to join our busy unit in Elective Orpington Theatres. We operate Monday - Saturday between the hours 08.00am - 8:00pm

The primary role of this post is focused on the scrub / circulatory role of the theatre practitioner in supporting the perioperative team during elective orthopaedic surgery.

In addition, the registered nurse will be responsible for ensuring all relevant equipment, prosthesis and loans sets necessary for the surgical procedure are at hand. Assist with surgical positioning and assist the registered nurse with the various roles involved when circulating for different surgical procedures.

The King’s Elective Orthopaedic Unit in Orpington is part of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and provides comprehensive health care services for a diverse community. The unit consists of four state-of-the art operating theatres, orthopaedic wards, and an admission lounge. It has been refurbished to a high standard, has excellent facilities for patients and staff, and is a short hop by train into London with all its attractions.

 Please note, experience working in orthopaedic theatres is desirable.

Main duties of the job

Job Summary:

  1. To work within both the nursing and multi disciplinary team to provide evidence based, holistic care to a group of patients from admission to discharge in department. 
  2. To take responsibility for managing and co-ordinating an assigned area of the department in the absence of more senior staff.
  3. To participate in the teaching and supervision of junior staff and student learners as required.
  4. To be a safe and effective practitioner able to provide patients and relatives with high quality peri-operative care.
  5. Particular emphasis is put at Kings on the need to ensure that all staff recognise their responsibility to deliver services in a high quality, courteous, patient focused manner maintaining patient confidentiality at all time. 
  6. You are required to have excellent communication skills and communicate effectively with the MDT, matrons, and floor coordinators, be a team player, be empathetic, and be able to remain calm and steady under pressure.
  7. You will participate and be a role model in the Perioperative care of patients who is undergoing orthopaedic surgery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Practice:

  1. To deliver a high standard of evidence based care to a specified group of patients.
  2. To adhere to HCPC Standards of conduct, performance and ethics / NMC Code of Professional conduct at all times.
  3. To maintain confidentiality at all times.
  4. To support patients, relatives, carers and friends and where appropriate involve them in the care of the patient.
  5. To be fully involved in the health education of patients and relatives, identifying each opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle.
  6. To liaise effectively with all members of the multi disciplinary team to ensure the relevant information regarding the patient’s needs/condition are communicated to them (including handover), and that any instructions from them regarding the patient’s care/condition are acted upon.
  7. To adhere to the Trust policy on valuing equality and diversity in the workplace, which incorporates  patients/visitors’ and staff.
  8. To acknowledge personal limitations in patient care and seek advice from senior staff members.
  9. To rotate to other clinical areas within the department as required or as identified as a personal development need in the appraisal process.
  10. To be involved with department audit.

  11. To report adverse incidents which occur in the department as per policy and assist in the investigation of such incidences as necessary.

  1. To maintain up to date and comprehensive records of care in accordance with NMC/HCPC, legal and Trust requirements
  2. To demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills with patients and their relatives/carers, thereby acting as a positive role model.

 Education and Research

  1. To keep up to date with current research to promote evidence based practice within the clinical area.
  2. To participate in Trust and Division initiatives to develop nursing practice
  3. To assist in the teaching, supervision and practice development of junior colleagues and students
  4. To actively participate in the training process by demonstrating and directly supervising.
  5. To participate in research and audit within the department

Management

  1. To manage an agreed workload with support from colleagues and senior staff as appropriate.
  2. To exercise leadership where appropriate.
  3. To ensure all Trust and local policies, protocols and procedures are adhered to by self and colleagues at all times
  4. To participate with the monitoring of standards of hygiene and cleanliness in the department and report as necessary
  5. To work within and support the multi-disciplinary team
  6. To share knowledge and skills developed with other members of the multi-disciplinary team
  7. To ensure effective admission/discharge of patients to the department liaising with other hospital departments as appropriate.
  8. To maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all areas within the Division and with associated clinical areas in the Trust.
  9. To observe personal responsibility for resource management.
  10. To observe a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of self, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management associated with this post

  • 1st level Registered general Nurse (NMC Pin) or Registered Operating Department Practitioner.
