Nurse Specialist in Pain Management

Job overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated nurse to join a committed and well-established specialist pain management team which is linked with the Supportive Care Team.

As a registered nurse with a Degree in Nursing, you will have proven experience of caring for patients with post-operative pain, demonstrated by relevant qualifications or experience.

Main duties of the job

You will work autonomously in the delivery of acute post-operative and chronic pain services and participate in the education of staff. In addition, you will be involved in ongoing service evaluation and improvement through clinical audit and guideline development/ upkeep.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

1.               Provide expert clinical knowledge and support to colleagues, patients and carers at the Trust and Network-wide on the management of post-operative pain.

2.               Independently assess, implement and evaluate patients with complex requirements, both post-operatively and in some treatment related situations.

3.               Ensure that all patient records, both written and electronic are accurate.

4.               Demonstrate enhanced communication skills when dealing with difficult or challenging situations.

5.               Manage clinical caseload, prioritising patient need across in-patient and out-patient settings to enable rapid response to calls for urgent advice.

6.               Participate in multi-disciplinary discussions on current caseload to ensure continuity and co-ordination of optimum patient care.

7.               Negotiate effectively with clinical colleagues across ward/departmental areas and the wider community.

8.               Flexible working hours to suit service needs

9.               Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies across Cancer Services to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to on-going pain management needs and discharge arrangements.

10.            To be flexible to the changes within the Pain Management Service and across the organisation.

11.            To undertake non-medical prescribing in clinical practice.

 

Managerial and Clinical Leadership

1.               Provide specialist pain management knowledge to clinical colleagues, patients and carers both within and outside the Trust.

2.               Participate in the evaluation of service delivery and identify areas for improvement and initiate change           

3.               Assist in the development of bids to support pain service developments at the Trust.

4.               Guide, influence and implement pain and palliative/supportive care policy within the Trust.

5.               Support the development of supportive care services at local, regional and national level through active contribution at appropriate multi-disciplinary forums within the Trust.

6.               Support clinical developments/projects to promote excellence in patient care.

7.               Provide and receive clinical supervision and mentorship to facilitate reflective practice.

8.               Collect and collate data on the pain management service activity ensuring the delivery of a high quality cost-effective service.

 

Education and Development

1.               To act as part of a highly specialist resource team within the hospital and assist with the assessment of pain management training needs across the range of disciplines.

2.               Maintain up to date high standard pain management skills and knowledge and maintain awareness of professional/national issues.

3.               Maintain enhanced communication skills.

4.               Identify pain management training needs Trust-wide and contribute to implementation and evaluation of teaching programmes accessible to colleagues within the multi-disciplinary team.

5.               Provide evidenced based education, information and training for a range of disciplines both internally and externally to the organisation.

6.               Contribute to the writing of policies and protocols applicable to the Pain Management Service.

7.               Maintain a professional portfolio to demonstrate competency in line with Trust and NMC guidance.

8.               Act always in accordance with NMC Code of Conduct and guiding documents.

9.               Contribute to and participate in Service Reviews.

 

Clinical Governance

1.               Participate in clinical audit and research to influence standards of pain management and disseminate findings through presentation to professional groups.

2.               Contribute to the writing of protocols relevant to specialist pain management.

3.               Promote patient and public involvement activities in the specialist area, leading to service improvement

4.               Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights to shape appropriate service provision that is equitable and accessible.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 1st Level Registered Nurse
  • On the degree pathway in Nursing
  • Preparation for mentorship qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Level 6 post registration qualification in pain management
  • Degree in Nursing
  • Enhanced Communication Skills Training
  • Non-Medical Prescribing

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 3 years post basic qualification
  • Experience of post-operative pain management
  • Participation in service development and implementation of change
  • Able to work autonomously and part of a team
Desirable criteria
  • Oncology experience

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Sound understanding of pain management (acute and chronic)
  • Able to perform assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care
  • Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationship with colleagues across health and social care setting
  • IT skills in word processing and email
Desirable criteria
  • Able to present information to professional groups
  • Experience of patient controlled analgesia, epidural analgesia and the use of Entonox

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of professional, NHS issues, and policy relating to pain management
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Good understanding of research and audit
