A great opportunity has arisen to join the Hospital at Night team. We are seeking an experienced senior nurse to join the current team of Clinical Night Managers. This is a key role within in the Hospital, with responsibility for managing the site out of hours, and clinically supporting the ward teams. It is a varied and rewarding role, with responsibilities ranging from managing patient flow and staffing allocation, to being a clinical nurse providing patient care. You will need excellent communication skills and a talent for problem solving.

The Clinical Night Manager provides senior clinical and operational leadership across the hospital during out-of-hours periods. The post holder coordinates hospital activity overnight, overseeing patient flow, emergency and elective admissions, and ensuring patients are safely placed in the appropriate clinical areas. They are responsible for maintaining safe staffing levels across the site through effective deployment of available resources.
Acting as an experienced senior nurse, the Clinical Night Manager offers clinical support, guidance and decision-making for multidisciplinary teams, including reviewing acutely unwell patients and supporting complex clinical situations. The role also involves responding to operational challenges, incidents and internal emergencies, ensuring risks are escalated and managed appropriately.
The Clinical Night Manager plays a key role in maintaining high standards of patient care, supporting staff, promoting effective communication across teams, and contributing to a safe, responsive and well-coordinated hospital service overnight.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
PROFESSIONAL
1. Lead and coordinate hospital activity out of hours as the onsite Clinical Night Manager, ensuring safe and effective service delivery across the Trust.
2. Manage emergency and elective admissions and coordinate patient flow to ensure patients are placed appropriately in line with the Patient Flow Policy.
3. Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary discussions regarding clinical workload, bed capacity and patient flow.
4. Assess risks associated with clinical workload and ensure safe deployment of Trust and Bank staff to maintain appropriate staffing levels and skill mix.
5. Exercise authority and accountability in staffing allocation decisions to maintain safe staffing across clinical areas.
6. Escalate operational or clinical issues through the Trust’s internal escalation processes and liaise with the Executive On-Call where required.
7. Participate in and coordinate the Trust’s response to internal emergencies such as fire, security alerts, cardiac arrests and other incidents out of hours.
8. Fulfil responsibilities as defined in Trust major incident and business continuity policies.
9. Ensure service-related risks are identified, reported and managed in line with Trust risk management procedures.
10. Ensure incidents and near misses are reported in a timely manner and contribute to incident investigations where appropriate.
11. Communicate risks, incidents and operational challenges effectively with relevant managers and senior nurses.
12. Maintain the Trust’s electronic rostering system, ensuring staff redeployments and absences are accurately recorded and communicated.
13. Maintain effective communication with on-call managers and senior leadership teams.
14. Ensure Trust policies and procedures are understood and applied appropriately within clinical areas.
15. Ensure issues relating to the physical environment are promptly reported to Estates and escalated where necessary.
16. Act as a senior clinical practitioner demonstrating knowledge, skills and expertise within evidence-based practice.
17. Support and assist clinical teams in delivering patient care, particularly during periods of increased service demand.
18. Undertake patient assessments and clinical interventions where required.
19. Monitor and review acutely unwell patients and provide clinical advice, guidance and appropriate escalation.
20. Arrange or undertake tests, procedures and treatments according to agreed protocols and guidelines.
21. Liaise with specialist teams including the Critical Care Outreach Team to support patient care.
22. Work within infection prevention and control policies and assist with outbreak management out of hours.
23. Ensure safeguarding concerns are identified and escalated appropriately and lead decisions regarding Mental Capacity Act assessments, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and Best Interest decisions.
24. Assist with clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
25. Promote the Trust’s corporate image and maintain professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
26. Address human resource matters in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
27. Act as the first point of contact out of hours for complaints or incidents and respond appropriately.
EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
1. Act as an educator and role model, supporting staff to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies required for safe and effective care.
2. Undertake competency assessments related to clinical skills required for the role and maintain competence through annual reassessment and regular practice.
3. Participate in service development initiatives and education programmes within and outside the team.
4. Support recruitment processes and contribute to the implementation of local induction and staff development programmes.
5. Contribute to the development, review and implementation of Trust policies and procedures.
6. Evaluate the impact of policies and procedures within the clinical environment and liaise with policy owners where required.
7. Participate in Trust-wide working and organisational initiatives as agreed with line management.
8. Support the Trust’s 24-hour service delivery ethos through education, leadership and service improvement activities.
