Job overview

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Ward Manager to take on the leadership and further development of our Paediatric Day Unit and Children's Outpatient's Departments.

The role will focus on leading an established team in ensuring the deliverance of high quality clinical care to our paediatric patients and their carers. There will be a focus on implementation of nurse led pathways, pre-assessment and quality improvement projects. The  children's day unit cares for children requiring day surgery, medical reviews and planned procedures. The post will require a credible and competent leader.

The Paediatric Ward Manager will be supported by a highly skilled and experienced multidisciplinary team.



Main duties of the job

Maintaining communication networks at all appropriate clinical and managerial levels. Having continuing responsibility for the management of the ward and delivery of patient care.
Responsibility for the line management of Emergency and observation unit based nursing and clerical staff.
Promoting commitment to the Trust.
Promoting continuous development in clinical practice and delivery of patient care, encouraging innovation and appropriate change in service delivery.
Managing resources within agreed budget.
Providing a suitable and stimulating learning environment for students and for the ongoing professional development of registered staff.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse Child (Level 1)
  • MSSP or equivalent
  • Multi-agency Child Protection Training
Desirable criteria
  • Degree in Nursing
  • Evidence of other relevant training
  • First Line Management Course

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Significant (2 years minimum) experience at band 6 plus three years post registration in paediatric acute care nursing
  • Significant previous experience as a shift/team leader
  • Relevant experience of teaching & supporting staff
  • Relevant experience in managing resources

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of strong & effective leadership & team working.
  • Knowledge of current paediatric and NHS issues
  • Sound understanding of child protection responsibilities and procedures
  • Evidence of self- motivation and ability to achieve objectives.
  • Evidence of ability to motivate, support & lead others
  • Evidence of safe clinical practice knowledge
  • Evidence of effective time & resource management
  • Ability to produce clear and written reports in English
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, relatives and MDT team in English
  • Competent in paediatric IV drug administration.
  • Computer literate
