GP Assistant - Pharmacy Support

Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a fixed term 12 month GP Assistants specialising in Medicines supporting our Pharmacy Team within the North Derbyshire PCN based in Chesterfield.

  • 1 x 37.5 hours - fixed term 12 months
  • 1 x 18.75 hours - fixed term 12 months

To provide high-quality, efficient support for medication-related tasks across the practice, including repeat prescription processing, stock management, and patient assistance. The role will reduce the administrative burden on clinical staff, enhance workflow efficiency and improve patient experience.

Main duties of the job

Processing Repeat Prescriptions:  Accurately handle and process repeat prescription requests using the practice’s clinical IT system (SystmOne).  Ensure prescriptions are checked and authorised by a suitable prescriber before issue.

Prescription Queries: Handle patient queries about prescription statuses or routine medication requests, ensuring timely resolution.  Liaise with community pharmacies to address issues such as stock shortages or errors.

Electronic Prescribing Service (EPS):  Support the efficient use of EPS by ensuring prescriptions are sent electronically to patients’ nominated pharmacies.

Patient Support:  Provide advice and support to patients regarding medication usage, such as how to take medication, manage side effects or request reviews.  Proactively assist vulnerable patients (e.g., those with poor medication adherence) by flagging concerns.

Administrative Support for Pharmacists:  Assist clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with tasks such as:

  1. Preparing for Medication Reviews (e.g., gathering patient information and test results).
  2. Recording interventions in the clinical system.
  3. Updating patient medication lists following hospital discharges or specialist letters. / Extracting relevant information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes
  4. Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients

Workflow Standardisation Across Sites:  Act as a liaison to ensure consistent prescription processes across all nine sites.  Work collaboratively with Admin, Nursing and clinical teams to streamline workflows.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Education to GCSE standard (or equivalent), to include Maths and English.
Desirable criteria
  • GP Assistant Certificate qualification
  • NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in Pharmacy Services or related healthcare qualification or willing to work towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience working in a pharmacy, healthcare or general practice setting
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical skills experience such as: o Blood Pressure reading o Phlebotomy o Urine Dipping o Basic Observations

Skills ans Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work under pressure and to prioritise own workload
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to work independently or as part of a team
  • Good interpersonal skill and customer service skills
