Job overview
The Specialist Health Visitor for the Children’s Neurodevelopmental and Learning Disability Team is a senior practitioner who provides specialist leadership, assessment, support and intervention for children aged 0–6 years with emerging or identified neurodevelopmental needs, including autism, ADHD and associated developmental differences. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the post holder delivers a family-centred, neuro-affirming and needs-led service that promotes early identification across the wider Health Visiting Team, timely support and improved outcomes for children and their families.
The successful candidate will be an experienced Specialist Community Public Health Nurse: Health Visitor, have developed significant additional expertise in the early presentation of neurodevelopmental need, and in the effective support for families. They will be an excellent communicator and have a solution focused approach.
Main duties of the job
The role acts as a key point of contact for families throughout their journey, providing expert advice, emotional support, care coordination and advocacy. The post holder works collaboratively with health, education, social care and third-sector partners to develop a holistic understanding of each child’s strengths, needs and aspirations, ensuring that support is coordinated, proportionate and responsive.
The Specialist Health Visitor provides clinical leadership for the early years neurodevelopmental pathway, contributing to assessment, formulation, intervention planning and service development. Responsibilities include delivering specialist assessments, supporting multidisciplinary decision-making, providing consultation and training to professionals, and promoting evidence-based and neuro-affirming practice across the wider system. The role also supports early years services and the Health Visiting workforce to recognise emerging neurodevelopmental needs and facilitate appropriate referral and intervention.
The post holder contributes to quality improvement, governance, safeguarding, audit and service evaluation activities, ensuring care is delivered in line with professional standards, national guidance and organisational objectives.

Essential criteria
- SCPHN Degree
- MSc or equivalent knowledge and experience
- Current NMC Registration
Desirable criteria
- Recognised post graduate qualification in a relevant area such as Autism
- Learning Disabilities nursing Qualification/Training
- Teaching Qualification and/or experience
- Post Registration Management Qualification and/or experience
Experience
Essential criteria
- Working with neurodivergent children
- Working with children in early years
- Working with other professionals/early years staff
- Relate clinical theory to clinical practice
- Knowledge and experience of a range of assessments appropriate for assessing social communication difficulties in pre-school and school children
- Knowledge of relevant policies and documents, e.g. Early Years Framework, ALN Act
Desirable criteria
- Experience of assessing children for autism diagnostic purposes
- Trained with knowledge & demonstrable experience of leading ADOS and ADIr assessments
- Experience of working in children centres and nurseries, schools
- Experience of working with paediatricians
- Experience, understanding and application of research
- Experience of supporting the neurodivergent community either professionally or voluntarily
