Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist

Job overview

The post holder will act as an expert Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) providing advice and clinical intervention to this patient group.

The Acute Oncology CNS supports the management of patients with acute complications from their cancer diagnosis, acute complications from their cancer treatment and patients who present as an emergency with suspected but undiagnosed cancer.

The Acute Oncology Service provides specialist advice ensuring the patients receive the appropriate care at the right time to facilitate effective decision making to support their clinical pathway and prevent delays in their clinical management or treatment. Promoting a seamless service within a multi-professional framework. This will be achieved through the core dimensions of the role, clinical practice, leadership, and acting as the patient advocate. 

Main duties of the job

You will  act as a key worker for Acute Oncology patients whilst in MSE, acting as a link to Multi-disciplinary team providing care for patients diagnosed with acute oncological emergencies as details in the national guidance and set out in the NMC code.

Provide specialist Acute Oncology cancer nursing undertaking specialist triage assessment of patients’ acute clinical needs, nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery using expert clinical knowledge and clinical skills.

Co-ordinate and manage nurse-led ward rounds under the indirect supervision of the Acute Oncology Consultant team.

Co-ordinate and manage the nurse led AOS triage unit in conjunction with the designated wards and or areas/teams.

Support chemotherapy advice line and adherence to national recommendations and ensure communication and governance structures are maintained at all times promoting patient safety, high quality specialist clinical care and advice

Be responsible for own caseload of AOS patients, ensuring this reflects the core components of the Clinical Nurse Specialist role, which involves high level of clinical decision making, advance clinical practice and providing consultations for healthcare professionals.

Ensure good, accurate communication both verbally and via formal documentation of electronic sources with all members of the nursing, multidisciplinary team, patients and relatives

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered General Nurse- registered with NMC
  • Post graduate qualification or equivalent experience at AfC band 7 or above
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working at a Clinical Nurse Specialist level
  • Experience working with Chemotherapy patients and triage
  • Clinical assessment & consultation accredited course SACT Passport
  • Post-registration qualification in acute oncology nursing, cancer site specific/oncology/palliative care

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Able to maintain effective working relationships with other stakeholders
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of advanced communication course

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of complex case management in diagnostics, long term conditions/cancer
  • Relevant post registration experience at band 7
Desirable criteria
  • Proven leadership and management experience/qualification Experience of audit and research
  • Experience in a range of settings (hospital and community)
