Job overview

The newly refurbished Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within the Children’s Hospital for Wales admits approximately 600 babies per year. In addition to being a level three NICU we are the only neonatal surgical unit in Wales. We also provide care for babies from across Wales who require specialist tertiary care and those who receive antenatal care within the foetal medicine unit.

We are looking to recruit an experienced neonatal nurse to join our supportive and experienced outreach nursing team who ensure the delivery of high quality, kind and compassionate care.

The unit provides a wealth of opportunities for ongoing development and experience within a supportive and friendly team. We are integrating FICare into our working practices to ensure we work collaboratively with the families on the unit along side our discharge nursing team.

 

Main duties of the job

The Neonatal Intensive Care is a 32 cot unit 8 ITU, 12 HD, 12 SC cots, offering both medical and surgical care to a wide range of infants from all over South Wales. The unit comprises of intensive care cots, high dependency cots and low dependency cots. This post offers an exciting opportunity to join a highly motivated team delivering neonatal outreach care in Cardiff and The Vale at a time of development within our discharge pathways.

Successful candidates will need to be sensitive towards children and their families, maintain standards of confidentiality and uphold the values of the UHB. In addition the person should be professional, possess good communication skills, and have a flexible approach to working within the Neonatal care service.

You will be able to work in our service supporting the delivery of regional neonatal community care and collaborative working with the Welsh Neonatal Network. There are great opportunities to make a difference within our evolving and positive team.

To support the neonatal outreach team leader in leading the neonatal outreach team. To provide specialist nursing skills to support early discharge of babies home. The post holder is expected to supervise and teach junior staff including basic and/or post basic students.

 

The post holder in conjunction with the team leader will be responsible for the management of care for patients on the caseload; this includes assessment of needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the monitoring of standards, including liaison with other agencies.

 

To plan, implement and evaluate care of babies and their families working within the UHB policies, procedures and guidelines, providing advice regarding discharge planning. To manage the care of a group of babies delegated by the team leader. In conjunction with the team leader to be responsible for specialised home follow up care of babies who have been cared for on the neonatal unit and continue to have significant health care needs. Ensuring good communication with all members of the team involved.

 

To ease the transition from hospital to home, promote family centred care and act as a resource for both the hospital and the primary health care team.
