The Paediatric Assessment Unit opened in October 2014 as part of the Children’s Unit at Northampton General Hospital.

It is a busy unit taking referrals from GP’s, Midwives, A&E and patients with short and long term open access.

The unit has 7 beds with additional space for ambulatory patients in the reception area.

The unit is currently open 7 days per week 9am-10pm including Bank Holidays. Shift patterns are 11.5 hrs between these times.

We are looking to extend the opening time to 24 hours, initially for 6 months over the Winter Months. to help the children’s unit manage winter demand during the Covid 19 pandemic. Posts will be to predominantly cover nights although some rotation to days will be necessary to cover the service.

Ideally you will have experience in a Paediatric Assessment Unit, Acute Ward, High Dependency Unit, PICU or A&E department.

As a Senior Staff Nurse you will be responsible for managing junior qualified and unqualified staff; Supervising and Assessing nursing and paramedic students on placement (Teaching and Assessing or Supervising and Assessing qualification essential).

You will be responsible for the day to day running of the unit, working alongside the medical team in managing the clinical case load in a safe, timely and effective way.

As you will be working as part of a small team you will need to have a flexible approach to work, work under pressure and respond to a rapidly changing workload and respond to emergency situations as they arise.

There will be an expectation that you are knowledgeable in relation to governance processes, and have some understanding of financial management.

The unit is managed by a Sister and supported by reception staff during the week and at weekends.

Following assessment children are either discharged home or admitted to one of the 2 children’s wards which take children with medical, surgical, oncology, metabolic and complex needs conditions. There is also a 2 bedded HDU.
